So, are you telling me that the compressor I have mounted under the hood will not drive the air starter? ;)

Ronco

P. S. What if I used two compressors? LOL

My only experiences with air starters hs been in marine and staionary gensets. Both have required lots of air. The recovery time if the engine didn't start was LONG. The systems would dump most of the air when cranking. One of the engines I work on actually uses two air starters to get the engine running. It is an ALCO 16 cylinder (10,660 cid). One starter will not supply enough torque to do the job.

This is the spec from the IR portable compressor site for a compressor rated @ 750 CFM @ 150 psi.

Air Compressor

CFM 750

Rated PSIG 150

Dimensions

Approx. Work Weight 7890 lbs.

Height (Including Tailpipe) 89 "

Length (Including Drawbar) 191 "

Width 86 "

Engine

Make/Model JD 6081A

Rated BHP 275 bhp

Rated RPM 2000 rpm

Wow, a 275hp JD to start a 160 hp Cummins.

I know, you can use a smaller compressor and store the air in a large receiver. But, ain't that interesting?

You have not heard loud until you hear an air starter. A freind of mine had one a grain truck. It was a fuel delivery truck in a prior life. They are was much lighter than the batteries that it replaced. The truck only had one lawnmower size batt. to run the light and such. Man was that think loud. Think of two 1 inch impact wrenches in a tunnel. The jump start is very easy. Any other semi-truck can supply the needed air. I would hate to use it in a parking garage. The noise would be deafining and you would never get enough air in there for a boost if needed.

Sorry for the missunderstanding. My point was how inefficient using a compressed air starter was. Just imagine using a 275 bhp engine at 2,000 RPM to turn over a Cummins B at around 500 RPM. An old rule of thumb was that it takes about 8 bhp (electric) to produce every 1 BHP from an air motor.

Depends on which type of air starter

Yes VANE type starters are quite loud and use a high volume with a high pressure requirement.

Turbine starters are very quiet and use less air at a lower pressure. We use the Austart brand on our little dink engines 300hp and lower.

The CTD accepts an SAE #1 flange. The I-R vane type that is specified for our engines is an SS175GB01R071-02H. It uses pinion code 71 (10 tooth) and has a maximum 18 hp at 150 psig and 800 SCFM.

On our units that still use Vanes (SS-815s at 2500 SCFM) and don't have the process gas pressure to run the starter, we use a 16hp Kohler with two stage Quincy air compressor and a 200 Gallon reciever. That gives us about a ten second roll with three minute recovery.

The Austart ATS73 has an SAE #1 flange and would start the mighty CTD with 18 hp at 100 psig and 465 SCFM. This means you could run a smaller tank at 150psig and regulate for supply pressure.

Here is their website: Austart

At 100 psig the actual flow is 76. 29 ACFM. For five two second rolls (0. 167 minutes) you would need 12. 74 cubic feet of air at 100 psig. Using a little formula from my Waukesha book on reciever sizing and the assumption that the starter will work down to about 60 psi, you would need a 2 cu. ft. or 15. 5 gal. reciever.

Air Start

I agree with the sound (some call it noise) that a vane starter creates and kinda like it. The only reservation would be the jump start if it don't start - You wouldn't call AAA unless you told them to swing by the rental yard for a towable air compressor:eek:

What are the benefits ON OUR TRUCKS of an air starter? Can you get rid of the batteries or are they still required for the intake heaters & such? How much weight would you save by going to an air start set-up?

air pharters?

We're putting them on ISLs right now for a customer. Our system uses four (4) 8. 3 ft3 air tanks that are refilled off the engine driven compressor to 120 psi. There is a rear air chuck to re-fill. They work great if the engine and oil are warm. Cold engine, forget starting on the first attempt if you have 15W oil in the crankcase.

The IR vane type are not very loud. They are much quieter than other brands and do not have a sonic whistle as some turbines.

Our units are delivered via driveaway service. I write a summary data sheet that goes with each driver. Special instructions for this sale include "AIR START SYSTEM Do not shut off engine unless near a high volume air source to charge system. "

The big tow trucks have air hookup such as Glad Hands or Foster chucks to recharge your system. Problem is they are around $200 just to roll out of the yard for a call.

Benefits for the ordinary user? Nope. Still need a battery. The air tanks and compressor will outweigh the current set-up.

Used to be common to hear air starters. They had a pretty good sized tank hanging on the side of the truck to supply them too. In fact, I drove some bulk cement trucks with them. I remember one night when this valve would not work to start the truck so I get to tapping on it. After I succeeded in breaking off the valve, I got to sit in the cold all night waiting for help to come. Ahh the good old days.

I used to live about 1/4 mile from a Peabody Coal Mine as a kid. I always knew when it was 7am cause all the haul trucks (250 ton giant dumps) would fire up and they had air starters. They sounded just like that old Mack in the movie "Maximum Overdrive". Do you really want your truck to come to life and try to run over you????
