I replaced my lift pump the other night thinking it was on its way out. After everything was installed and primed liked it should be truck started right up, sat there and idled just fine, and good response all the way to WOT. Problem solved, right, or so I thought.

Haven't driven it in a couple days because I was messing with the TPS among other things. Went out this morning before work and started it up. Fired on the first crank just like usual. Went out 5 minutes later and it had stalled, the same way it did Monday morning when I suspected the lift pump. Hit the key and it just cranked over. Put the pedal on floor, cranked for 30 seconds and it fired but would only stay running at WOT. Repeated and same result. As soon as I back off of the pedal it dies. I know it has fuel in it, the filter is new, the lift pump is new, now I am really suspecting the IP.

Anybody else ever have this kind of problem? Is there something else I should look at or try? If it is the pump, is there a common problem that could cause this?

One last thing. If the old VE is giving up the ghost, should I rebuild or just buy a reman pump?

Help... ... ... .

Any chance you have an air leak and the lift pump needs priming again? When my 93 bit the dust I had a shop rebuild it for me up in Maine. Cost me $500 with me removing it and re-installing it. Prices are higher now, but a good shop can make it just as good or better than a factory reman.

After it quit this morning I did reprime the lift pump before I started cranking on it again. I inspected the fuel lines all the way from the tank after install the other night but will look again. I don't want it to be something simple like that after I pull the pump out.

I need to find out if there is a good pump shop nearby. I know of some Cummins shops and one general diesel shop, but don't know how much pump work they do. Better give them a call.

Try looking here Chris

Bosch Service

I don't think Cummins Northeast does pumps, Albany or Syracuse would be the best bet for locations of service shops. I'll look and see if I've still got one of my NE Farming magazines and look for the ad that the dealer was listed in that I used, it showed service locations all over the North East.

Thanks Tim. Your help is appreciated. I was going to try a couple of places in Plattsburgh also to see if they get into pumps.

What kind of turn around time did you get when you had yours done?

I dropped it off and had it back in a couple two three days. There is a guy down in Corinth that is a diesel service shop, he doesn't do pump rebuilds but he may know who does and who's good. His shop is B & A Diesel and his number is (518) 654-2977. Be prepared to talk for a while if you call him, the guy likes to gab but can have some good information

After a bit of calling around I found that D&W Diesel in Albany is the main pump shop in the whole eastern part of the state. I spoke with a guy there and they will do reman exchange or rebuild your pump with any custom mods you desire. Good to know. Prices are more than reasonable too. They even had a stock rebuilt VE on the shelf.

Just an update. I got the truck running tonight and it stayed running for more than a few minutes. It idles with no trouble, and runs down the road fine too. Shuts off, starts back up. Could it be I didn't have all the air purged from the system after the lift pump install? That's the only thing I can come up with.

I'm going to keep D&W's number handy just in case.

These things can be funny. I've had trouble getting them running after a fuel filter change. If there was some white smoke when you started it the first time, I'd venture to say that was your problem.

Daniel

Now that you mention it, there was some white smoke present when I ran it the first two times after the lift pump change. I hope that's all it was.

I ran it yesterday about 60 miles with a ton of hay in the back and no trouble. Proper acceleration and plenty of power.
