Where is the check in/on the VP 44 located? Where can you get a new one? Can I install a check valve downstream of pump?

I am trying to solve my hard starting problem again. I had it fixed then had to have a new VP 44 installed, now it is back.

Standing on the driver's side of the truck, facing the VP44, I think it is just to the left of the fuel supply line to the VP44.

On the VP44, there's two fuel connections - supply and return. Remember, the VP uses diesel to cool and lubricate it - and returns a portion of fuel back to the tank.

The shop manual (my 2001 copy shows it on page 14-84) calls it a "overflow valve". It looks like a banjo bolt with 2 sets of holes.

I looked at mine, when I was concerned about it causing problems. The 2 very small holes offer no flow restriction - just their small size limits the volume of fuel passing through. When checking with compressed air, the larger hole only passed air when the air pressure was above 15 psi.

The shop manual says the to check this overflow valve with compressed air, and it should start to pass air in the 14psi to 16psi range. The shop manual made NO mention of the small holes that constantly pass air/fuel, but it DID say that around 70% of the fuel supplied by the lift pump should return to the tank. As I don't think my original factory LP could supply much about 10, I'm deducing that the small holes are supposed to be there.

I did look at an overflow valve on the shelf at a parts store, and it looked exactly the same - small holes and big holes.

Thanks D, I was picturing an in-line valve. I will take mine out and check it this weekend. I have the shop manual, wasn't looking for an overflow. Thanks again for information and correct name.

Don't really understand how it could be causing the hard starting if there are small holes that allow fuel through all the time. I was picturing a valve that would hold a prime when the truck was not running.

I took the Overflow valve out and cleaned it. It opened at somewhere between 15 and 20 pounds. When I put a suction on it I could draw air through it. Don't understand how it works but that does not make sense. I cleaned it WD40 and compressed air then put it back in.

I don't know if it had any affect on the hard starting but I think the engine sounded better. I don't know if it was one of those things like washing the truck and it runs better or it actually sounded better. If the check valve was dirty and had a piece of dirt lodged in the seat could cleaning it affect the running of the engine?

If my FASS puts out in excess of 16 PSI could it be opening the check valve and dumping the prime? I know it only comes on for . 5 seconds when you turn the key; would that be enough to unseat the check valve?

Called Geno's they don't carry them (today anyway).

Shawn, would not have done me any good to have let you know. However, I do think that some of the people at Geno's have a better idea of what they have then others. (They might have it) To bad, I was going to get an automatic engine shut-down also. Don't have the money but I figured it would save me some shipping money.

Uh Oh. I better call Genos and find out what the heck. I just bought one a couple weeks ago from them and replaced my original one just on Sunday. Started up truck checked for leaks real quick seemed to work fine. Fuel pressure looked good however I didnt drive it anywhere. Wonder what they sold me. Didnt look exactly like the old one but pretty darn close.

Just picked up an overflow/check valve from the Cummin' dealer in South Atlanta. Valve $29 and the gaskets were about $3. I hope it fixes the problem. Thanks to everyone who helped.

I don't think I would worry Barry, the guy I talked to at Geno's didn't sound as squared away as the guy I usually talk to. Didn't get his name, but he kept trying to lump it in with cam sensors and other sensors they didn't carry.
