OK, so I got a new #4 injector, and what do you know, the knock is 90% gone...

BUT, now for the bad news, all it because of CARBON build up and STAR (dealer hotline) told my tech to tell the customer (me) to make sure I run my truck hard, because he is sure the others are carboned up too, just not as bad

RUN IT HARD???? -- Are you kidding me? I have worn out the carpet under my throttle!

I am just a little mad because they are blaming me for the carbon build up... Maybe is because I do not tow often enough?

When the tech showed me the injector, he said the carbon comes off really easy, and that I could most likely do it at home by just pulling the injectors, and cleaning the tips off. - (like I want to do that ever 40k miles! :( )

Anyway, here are the pics: (KEEP IN MIND THE CARBON WAS ALL THE WAY DOWN THE NOZZLE, the tech just broke it off)

My uncle used to work in a GM garage in the 80's. He said they would get gas cars in that were mostly owned by elderly people, primarily women, that had been driven so conservativly the carbon had built up to the point they wouldn't run right. Some of them they were able to run the pi$$ out of and get them to clean up but others were so bad they wouldn't wind up at all. To those extreme cases he said they would take them out back of the dealer with the intake pipe removed and hold them wide open while spraying a mist of water into the intake from a garden hose. He said in a matter of seconds the carbon would begin to break loose and blow out the exhaust.

Now I'm not saying this would work for you or eventhat you shoud try it but I do believe it would be a good idea to buy/install a water/meth kit... you know... . for the health of your truck ;)

Do fuel additives have any impact on the carbon build up?

Well about evern 7k miles, I usually run a real strong content of PowerService additive, Didn't seem to help at all

I will be trying the "BG" fuel injection diesel service nexte week. Made esp for diesels with common rail, you actually run the truck off the 1/2 gallon of stuff they give you, Totally disconnect stock fuel inlet, crazy huh

I would have gladly let you make one of my 8 cross country trips towing my 20,000 pound trailer!

I believe driving the pi** out of an unloaded truck with added fueling is not the same as pulling heavy for 10 hours a day.

Tom, I'll let you know before I go on another trip, just in case you don't have anything better to do with your truck that week :)

I think you are right, Even though I run my truck hard, it just does not see enough heavy load... I better get to a load dyno soon!

Ps - Got any bumper pull trailers? ;)

My truck used to have a knock. Had it from 8K miles to abut 35K miles. Annoyed the snot out of me. I tried Power Service for a while with no change. I bought a case of Stanadyne Performance Formula and it started to sound better soon after. It took a few thousand miles for it to go away completely. My truck is mostly a daily driver and I tow a 2-ton pop-up occasionally.

Start sled pulling your rig. That ought to get rid of that carbon in a hurry. :-laf

Funny you mention, OCT 1st and 2nd, there is a DYNO day it Midwest Diesel in Oak Grove,MO - right outside of Kansas City,mo

John Isaac of Floor-it diesel is (i think) bringing the dyno for both days, And maybe a little sledpulling event on saturday night...

just might have to hook up this time ;)

how is carbon around the outside of the injector going to cause knock??? i can see it causing a knock if it is on the tip and distorts the spray pattern, but if it is up from there in the part that is inside the cylinder head below the copper crush washer that should in no way cause knock...

something seems very fishy about that diagnosis to me. .

what kind of EGT's are you seeing?... ... you would think 1400+ would burn it off

where do you fill up? i am wondering if its the fuel in your area

i wonder if high sulfur would cause that??

Scott

I bet there's some additive out there that can prevent carbon from being able to stick to the injectors... question is, which one?

-Ryan

Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant is pretty good with that kind of carbon removal-- and locally available.

However, I far prefer Fuel Power FP60 from www.lubecontrol.com if you're willing to order it. This stuff is awesome.

Thats whats funny, With the old turbo (stock) - I would see 1600 no problem, Just not very often, Now with the SP66, I have not broke 1350 since I put it on - Maybe I need more fuel ;)

Does your truck idle a lot, Tomey?

Michael

Well, STAR hotline tried to tell the tech it was because of the over 40% idle time... Well, well, My idle time is like 23. 5% (which I find hard to believe), blows that theory out the window - I think they are grabbing at straws, They never had this knock with 2nd gens, Heck you could not even hear it if it was there!

Tom... I think you live in an area thats just too sedate for your truck. Come on out here to the DC area and play with the Beltway Bandits! You'll get so fed up :-{} you'll stick the skinny pedal thru the floor often enought to prevent that buildup. :-laf
