Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Injector question(s)?

I have read in a few posts where a bad injector melted a piston or blew something up. How does a bad injector cause damage? I got just over 200k on my truck now is this something I should be worried about, are there any sypmtoms when they start to go bad? What is the average life of an injector?

An injector in a HPCR engine is a very different device than the injectors in your truck. In the HPCR engine the rail contains fuel under extreme pressure, something like 25,000 psi, and each injector is electronically cycled open multiple times at the top of each cylinder's compression stroke to allow a precisely measured amount of fuel to be injected. If an injector sticks open or partially open it overfuels and overheats that cylinder. Joe Donnelly suggests they should be considered for replacement after 100k miles or so. The injectors on my 2006 were fine at 230k miles when I sold it.

The injectors in your truck provide fuel to each cylinder after a mechanical injection pump sends it fuel. Your injectors may last indefinitely if you use clean fuel and change the filter regularly.

We have a '95 Mack truck with an E7-350 (pre-ETech) and ~1 million miles/over 25,000hrs on it. Still runs like a top and still starts at 30* without ether, or even being plugged in. Original injectors, to my knowledge. Motor has never been opened up either. Just won't die.

Proper maintenance is key.

When an injector on a 12-valve or 24-valve goes bad the worst that happens is a miss, rough idle, smoke, etc. but no damage internally (unless a tip blows off, which happens once in a very rare while).

When an injector goes bad on 2003+ engine it often turns into a blowtorch and can destroy a piston in mere moments.

FWIW, my original injectors were still working when I replaced them at 570k. I did have more smoke than I wanted :--) and decreased mileage. Yours aren't even broken in.
