If you are not towing too heavy, make the bulk of your HP with the largest injectors you can stand and add a low end fueling/timing/boost fooler, like the Edge EZ. Big injectors don't strain the VP44, hot fueling boxes do. Just my $0. 02.

INJECTORS first, then if you need more, a box.

You will need a boost fooler. I keep my fooler in the truck for when my box dies. It has happened.

Maybe the injectors are not as hard on the pump as a fueling box but I think they make the pump work harder. The pump needs to pump harder to atomize the fuel through larger or more injector holes. I'm almost sure I read that in a post on here somewhere.

My vote has always been big injectors over a big box. As mentioned above, the injection pump does not work harder with the injectors... fueling boxes are hard on injection pumps. EGT's are also far lower and better controlled with injectors vs a box, and driveability is better too.

inectors vs a box

alright, call me crazy. it's happened before... ... ...

after reading about power enhancements. i went with stage III injectors and a boost fooler as the first "BOMB". i couldn't be happier, except if i could get rid of the dreaded "shudder". i don't have tire burning off the line drag racing torque/power, but when the little HY spools that sucker pulls strong. the nice thing about the HY is that it spools fast. i have great towing power, great merging power, and fantastic passing power. passing on a 2 lane road is no longer terrifiying. merging--i can be running 80-90 MPH when i run out of merge lane. my EGT's are lower than stock, with the III's and a boost fooler( the wastegate had to be "turnbuckled" shut to get 38 PSI boost).

NO SMOKE... ... ... alright a little, with WOT launch.

the transmission "shudder" is about to be solved. no problem except at about 50-55 MPH in overdrive. cruise seems to be the worst. it adds power gradually, and the TC "shudders". so far, keeping the transmission out of overdrive under 60 is working.

would i do it again????? IN A HEART BEAT!!!!!!!!!!!

MILEAGE, ABOUT THE SAME, (if i could keep my foot out of it. ). Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

I Vote For The Edge EZ

I would vote for the Edge EZ. Sure it makes the injection pump work harder, but it's nothing it can't handle. If I were to lightly BOMB my rig, I'd go with gauges and then an Edge EZ. It's simple to install (and de-install) too! Of course, it probably won't stop there. It didn't for me.

Edge vs ingectors

got no argument with an edge instead of injectors. i've never tried a box. i never got a chance to try a "box". after reading and talking to various folks, i went with the injectors. AWESOME!!!!!

little/no smoke, and the power i wanted!! low EGT's.

pulling Jellico with a load, ran 75 MPH with EGT pre-turbo of 1000*. could have accelerated to insane speed in overdrive. :D

If you tow and are looking for more than the EZ or VA will give then get it from injectors. EGT with the wire tap boxes is HOT in the upper levels, suitable only for hotrodding unless intake and exhuast mods are done. For top levels on the boxes the mods needed are extensive and expensive.

If you want a 100HP USEABLE gain get it out of injectors. Driveability is better as MikeR said, and EGT is reasonable. The 100HP from a box is not useable for anything but playing.

Howard buddy where ya been? Long time no see!

I gotta vote for both... . :D Only 275's for now-in the next month or so I'll be sliding in the Bully Dog 2's I won at the Calgary Diesel Dyno Stampede to hold me over until I make up my mind whether I want DD3, SuperMentals or something else altogether! Sure nice to be able to turn that box up and down at will-although I will agree the EGT's get totally insane on higher levels.

Jason

BOTH we said!!!

That makes it much easier, you just have to figger out which one to do first...

But if you mess up like me(going to) you'll get too much box and too much injector and you'll have to uprate the clutch, exhaust, and fuel supply and turbo... as well as renew the rear tires WAAAAY before they dry rot.

Smoke Rules !

Definitely NOT true in MY case! :p

I have the Comp, tow a 7000 load up Sierra grades - have GREAT power - running on 5x4, see an absolute MAXIMUM of 1200 EGT at 32 psi boost. ;)

I had to tow my Ford-lovin' buds 14,200 lb. Alpenlite fiver up a 7% Oregon grade last week after his transmission puked out - same readings, NO problem!

I feel absolutely NO NEED for any more power, OR power mods of ANY kind!:p ;) :D

(My Ford buddy agrees... );)

You didn't tell us what you want: A little more power, a little more mpg, a LOT more power?

My experience has been different than most people report, but I notice we both have ETH's so here goes:

I have the 275 injectors, and I'm very happy with them. They improved mpg and performance. The boxes I've tried were great power enhancements, but did not improve my mpg. The injectors smoke a little bit, but it is easy to control. With boxes, especially a box + injectors, I have to really concentrate on easy, easy starts to avoid leaving small clouds of smoke between gear shifts.

I think that if your main goal is power, you'll want more than just 275 injectors, and the boxes will flat do the trick. But if you just want to "bump" the power a little bit, and improve the mpg while you're at it, then a set of 275's is a very economical way to do it.

Before doing any power mods, are you ready to say: "I am my own warranty station?" (At 101k, this is no longer an issue for me. )

injectors

i was surprised at how low my EGT's are (pre-turbo), with the little HY and III's. even before i got the wastegate held shut, with only 28 PSI of boost, towing up Jellico in nothern TN, my EGT leveled off at 1000* at 75 MPH.

i haven't Dynoed, and probably won't. DD's website has dyno sheets from the same setup as i have on a similar truck. they got 100 RWHP, and 200lb-ft RW torque improvement.

i don't care about adjustability. my mileage is the same, perhaps slightly better. i have little or no smoke. why adjust anything??

anyway, to adjust the EZ, don't you have to take the cover off and move a jumper? i got similar power to a comp, and didn't have to violate the pump wire, or install a pump cover.

if i ever get the transmission BOMBed, a comp or a FMS would be a nice addition, but i'm pretty sure would need a different turbo, pusher pump, etc. that would be a serious HP/torque upgrade.

injector install isn't as easy as putting on an EZ, but it ain't that hard. i'm still all :D :D :D :D Oo.

Captain,

I have stage 3 injectors (100+ hp). My engine produces 285 hp and 617 lb ft of torque with this setup. I do have a boost fooler. I DO NOT have a box. I can pull a 5000 pound trailer up any interstate highway grade on the west coast with my cruise set at 60. That is plenty of umph for me. I get just under 20 mpg hand calculated (empty) and 16 mpg calculate with a GCVW of 11550 pounds.
