ridiculous

It is simply ridiculous to claim that a 6700lb CTD can get that kind of mileage under normal conditions. Either you dont know how to compute mileage,or your odo is OFF-- MANY of the ODO's on the Chysler products are way way off.

My 8,000 lb CTD gets an honest 22mpgs when I run to Michigan.

If his is lighter, then it may be feasable to obtain his figures.

OK, so you say the man is stupid or a liar? Not a good move. If you know it all why are you here? I certainly hope it is not to share your "wisdom".

I believe that kind of mileage can be had. I average 20 mpg and have had as high as 24 mpg. I do use my cruise and I like some black smoke now and then, I don't drive for mileage. I have never had my timing checked.

LSmith, don't feel bad. Where's Chris from Utah? I was accused of being too ignorant to figure mileage with a calculator because someone else couldn't achieve the same mileage.

I got 28 mpg on my 93 ctd 5 speed on a regular basis just driving every day unloaded. was not hard to do. I put 500K on that truck and it never failed me or did my computation on milage. now if I worked it that number became null and void. The man said he was able to do this I am confident he did just this. I use math every day and am confident my calculations are correct on this as I am sure the post in question is confident. IT can be done. Try it. I have attained 22 out of my 98 dually quad cab 4 wheel drive. Its no fun though!! Patrick

Maybe...............

you just don't know how to drive your truck efficiently, Mr. Gifford. :D

*PS. My truck weighs 7600, with my fat butt in it... ...

Giff'

There's no need to get nasty! As a matter of fact, the last manufacturing line (I'm a Degreed Engineer) I was responsible for was the Vehicle Speed Sensor assembly line at VDO. They supplied DC the parts. So, yes I can compute mileage. Let's get this back to injectors instead of calling fellow Cummins brothers liars.

My favorite injector for the 12valve is the DD III. A Diesel Dynamic injector based on the 215 Bosch core. In my engine they ran smoother, smoked less, got better mileage then the "proper" 370 Marine injectors. I believe that Joe D said they the III's made 5 or 8 hp less then the 370's and I don't doubt it but the III's ran better for me. Fuel mileage, empty, is always 20mpg or better unless I get some really sorry winter fuel. Timing, fuel pressure and boost integrity play a good part in fuel economy;). Larry

27.5

So you get 935 miles to the tank, is that with or without a tailwind? What speed do you drive? Tires, gears, injectors? Your claim requires examination, whatever you are doing could be the answer to our country's reliance on foreign oil!

27. 5 X 34 := 935 LOL Come on people. Imagine if he was able to squeak a full 35 gallons in the tank, then he could go 970 miles. 3 tanks of fuel and he could drive to California and prove me wrong.

Hmmmmmmmmm.........

Gif, I think this is what vssman said:

The best mileage was 27. 5 highway/20 in town when it was fairly new & stock. Now its about 22 highway/17 in town. (Even worse when I'm on it)

SO it would probably be hard for him to prove it. However, I believe him and everybody else when they say they get incredible mileages. I personally have gotten 25. 5, AT VERY BEST, but I don't drive like that normally.

JBurnes, I have heard the same thing about the DDIII's vs. the marine 370's, per Rodger Rodbolt. There is quite a difference in price, though, with the DDIII's running 100-200 bucks more. Catch the 370's on sale at Piers, or maybe ask if he can give you a better price than listed on his webpage. He did for me when I bought my 370's from him (Which are STILL laying on top of the 'fridge, no time to install:( ).

The bottom line is that it was an exageration. It can not ever be repeated.

Its not what I come to the TDR for.

Gifford, not to stir the pot any more than it is, what kind of mileage do you get under normal conditions? I average 20-21 during the summer running empty at 6,700#. Winter varies a little more with fuel and warm up time, but anywhere between 17-19.

my mileage?

Oh, I get around 47. . only when loaded though, and I put this magic juice in the tank it seems to help, then I get some pixie dust from vsssman...

I Wouldn't be a bit Surprised.....

... If the 25 mpg figures are possible, especially on the 3/4 ton trucks with good tires and an injection pump that is "right on".

I keep a running log of all my fuel fills - cost, gallons, miles between tanks, etc. - and through end of November my Excel spreadsheet shows 20 fillups in "empty" condition for a total of 516. 86 gallons, total mileage of 10,232. This is an average of 19. 8 mpg, with a lot of short trips. I normally drive a lot more but health problems this year kept me off the road quite a bit. Highway mileage is about 21 mpg at 70 unloaded, 22 and change at 65 unloaded. Haven't been able to keep it at 55 long enough for meaningful computations...

Interesting note: For that 20 tanks, the standard deviation of the economies for each tank is only 0. 7 mpg! In other words, the truck gets very consistent mileage regardless of how I drive it back and forth to work. On my gassers, the SD is normally around 3-5 mpg so I am pretty pleased with the consistency of the CTD.

It is also interesting to see the swing in mpg for ostensibly identical trucks as reported on TDR. Looks like the pump timing must be more varied than we would have suspected. Not much else that could explain the variation without attendant engine problems...

Then leave, pack sand, or shut up.
