Going to put new injectors in soon for a little more power. Truck is all stock except for an edge ez, FASS, and 4" exhaust.

I called my normal go-to guy, who is a well respected diesel guy here in the PNW, to get pricing. In the past, he has recommended Stage I injectors. And I see a lot of folks on the tdr go to rv275's.

Well, evidently my guy doesn't work there anymore. Without seeing my truck, just a phone call, the guy I talked to on the phone said I should first upgrade the throttle body and torque converter. (Previous guy said for the power upgrade Im talking about, the oem valve body and torque converter are fine).

So, my question is, is this guy just trying to sell me something ? Or is he probably correct ? Truck only has about 110k miles, and the trans seems OK to me right now.

When I upgraded mine I did not have a real problem with the trans with an edge ez and rv275s I put those on at about 10-15k miles I rebuilt the trans at 110k and it was still working fine but wanted to do it on my time not its out in the middle of bfe. However I had not been towing much over a 4-5k trailer up to that point and was only about a dozen times nor did I drive it hard. After the trans I started towing heavier 10-12k gooseneck that I pulled occasionally but still didn't drive hard. Also the rv275sand edge ez were about the most the stock hy could take. Once I added a smarty to the mix While it would drive fine most of the time up in the mountains it bark more than I liked and would get hot on long pulls upgraded to a hybrid and all was well.

So, in your opinion, the hy is the weak link ? I only pull a 4k lb tt. Could go up to 5k fully loaded, but probably not.
Since I live in seattle, most of my pulling would involve mountains at least at some point. And when I go on my annual road trip, it always involves a couple of long steep pulls. And I like to keep my speed at 55-60, even going up hill.

Stock turbo is fine for mild upgrades 50-75hp, especially if the max your towing is 4-5k.

The first upgrade I did to my former 00 was a Smarty and it cranked up to level 9 would slip the TC under heavy acceleration. It depends on the health of your trans, but any power upgrades to a stock 47RE will shorten the lifespan, esp if you use the power.

The HY35 is the worst most restrictive turbo that ever came out of the factory on a Dodge Cummins. You're pretty much at its limit with just the EZ or injectors, not both, at least in terms of usable power. At least you have gauges. A decent and affordable upgrade is the HE351 from a 2004.5-07, I had one on my 2001, it's a good turbo worth supporting a couple mild mods (EZ and Stage 1). But that turbo you need different piping leading to the intercooler because the turbine outlet is different on 3rd Gens.

As for the trans I think it would be alright if you're careful with it. But I've been told if you hurt it, it costs more to upgrade than if it started out in good working order.

It sounds like it might be more tinkering than I want to do to a truck that runs and drives will now. But, answer me this. What if I changed the injectors to stage one, or rv275's, and removed the ez box ? Would that give me more torque/power than I have now ? Stay the same ?
Thanks again for your input.

OK, I towed with Jammer 1's and Comp in EZ mode for a number of years with my stock HY35. I did however have an ungraded DTT towing transmission. Had to watch the pyro closely, however I was towing 12K+ 5er. The stock transmission will take one upgrade, however the second one and a heavy foot will soon take it out. Also your 3.54 gears are harder on the transmission than my 4:10's BTW!

I switched to a PRD35-12W so that my Banks exhaust brake would still bolt up. Spools similar to the HY35 but moves move air like the HX-35 it is based on.

Switching to injectors without the EZ is no different than the EZ without injectors. Both are around 50-60HP.

Also your 3.54 gears are harder on the transmission than my 4:10's.

SOOOOOO! Leave it alone!!!!!

Want more power, look at the top of the throttle pedal on how much slack is in the cable. Lift the pedal, if it comes up about an inch I will tell you how to fix it.

SNOKING

Thanks Snoking, probably answers my question.
But here is another one. How long do the OEM injectors normally last ? Is there any advantage with about 110k miles on them to replace with another set of OEM ?

If the truck is running well and not making oil they are most likely just fine! Do an oil sample to learn more about the condition of the motor. Snoking

What Snowking said.

There is a reason Dodge detuned that engine, and gave the high output option on the NV5600. It's that POS auto transmission.

RV 275s or Edge EZ - NOT BOTH, and that is about all you are going to get away with until you upgrade that trans.

You can also regear you axles to the 4:10 or higher and get a bit more out of your truck. Won't be fast, but will pull real nice.
