Great site guys... been lurking and enjoying it for awhile now. First time CTD owner here, anyway I installed my AFE stage 2 w/ PG7 about two weeks ago. Since then I have been getting a real odd noise, The noise occurs more frequently when towing, or when I really get on the thottle and then let off hard. It sounds liek the truck is choking or something... like a weird burping noise coming from the intake... it seems to happen when i bring the boost up to 20-32 psi and then let off hard, or if I am on it hard towing, and it downshifts into OD and the boost drops from max to 10-20psi. All clamps appear to be tight and in place. I can't quite figure it out... but it started right aftre the intake went on, and it doesnt occur on every trip, just when operating inside the above mentioned conditions. If I dont figure this out soon, the OEM intake is going back on until I can figure it out. HELP!

Thanks in Advance.

Try not to back out of it to hard, its the turbo makeing the noise, they will all do it! What settin u runnin the triple dog on, maybe run a lower setting while towing! Be carefull with the stocker!! Just my . 02$

There is a condition, very much like the one you described there the turbo sort of haves a back lash. You get in to it and the boost builds then for some reason you have to lift off suddenly, and the turbo makes a very loud whooshing sound. This is caused by the sudden loss of drive pressure and the turbo and can be very damaging to the turbo under the right conditions. Basically the sudden loss of drive pressure causes the turbo to quite turning so fast it in some cases snaps the shaft that holds the two turbines together. Under ideal conditions one would hope to always be gentle on the acceleration and deceleration of the turbo, but because we drive on roads and interact with other drivers that is nearly impossible to do. The main thing to take from this is to understand what the engine and turbo are doing and try your best to drive in a manor the best suits the two. That would be avoiding sudden accelerator pedal movement in any direction, and staying smooth with the throttle. Always look ahead and try and anticipate the traffic movement. I've been a diesel owner since '96 and know you can only do so much to avoid sudden deceleration, but a good driver does have the ability to help the situation.

There have been others on this site that reported broken turbine shafts, so the dangers are real. I would suspect you are doing nothing more then hearing more of what is going on now that you have installed the new Intake air system. Because of there design, they transmit slightly more noise, both the great whistle of the turbo and the negative affects of everyday driving. Good luck and enjoy your new intake air system.

It's the turbo Barking so to say. Mine started doing the exact same thing when I put on a AFE intake. Try not to let off fast and it won't do it.

They are correct. Its turbo bark. I got the same thing on my 03 with the PG7. Took it off, still had the same performance, with no barking, and never looked back.
