I too would love a 6 speed. i have even looked into putting a 68rfe in when my current trans dies. It isn't cheap though and i am sure their would be many growing pains.

My 91 cummins was a stick 5 spd (dual disk clutch) with Gear vendors OD (essentially a 4 spd with two od gears, similar to the 68rfe), loved that trans. setup (except it wasn't the fastest shifting thing around).

The turbo sounds great! Is smog going to be an issue?

Dave, The turbo still looks the same externally as the stock because it is the same turbo just modified internally. The turbo should have been this way from new. I can't believe how well it runs. I was going through Utah with some head winds. I was in 6th running about 65mph towing my 5th wheel. Highest I saw it go was 1100 when I had to climb a hill in 5th. I was at 23 -26 psi boost and the hill was STEEP. I haven't ONCE seen my EGT warning light come on since this turbo install. I set my EGT warning at 1200*

This sounds like the mods I'd like to do to my 05 DRW.

I have a plastic intercooler, should I change that out as well?

This is an awesome thread at just the right time!... :)

Your plastic inter cooler is on "Borrowed Time" from all the write ups I have seen here. It is not a question as to WILL it fail it is more a question as to WHEN it will fail. I would look for a stock all aluminum inter cooler.

It's been on my mind for some time now.

It's in this scope of work now.

I had a friend mention Bell Trubo, is there a prefered shop to have the work done if I dare ask.

I've really been wanting to keep my PacBrake exhaust elbow and reworking the stock trubo assembly dovetails in nicely with that issue.

Ill be towing heavy and this is exactly what I wanted to do.

On a side note with this trubo work is there a recommendation for the air filter? ....... I'm still running the stock assembly.

As always, thanks in advance.

I still have the stock air filter assembly and it seems very adequate. The little filter minder stays in the good zone so I know I am not restricted in the air box. I DO have a Pacbrake too. Especially because you are towing heavy, you need to get rid of that plastic tank intercooler. I also have a set of the Mr Bob's silicone hoses on the intercooler.

Turbo is in. Drove it home from the shop yesterday and yes, it is WOW. Noticeably less black smoke (none?) at high accel. The SOTPM (Seat of the Pants Meter) noticed the difference. Unfortunately I winterized and parked the trailer so I won't get a chance to try towing with it until next summer - so I may actually have to finish my landscaping project and tow some rocks around to test it! Looking forward to driving it the rest of the week. Will report back when I get some miles on it. Thanks to AH64ID and Motorhead for the help and suggestions/information/inspiration.

Glad it worked well! We just got back from a 2200 mile trip to Moab Utah and back. My truck has never run so well. NEVER exceeded 1150 EGT! I weighed my truck with 5th wheel hooked up and both fuel tanks full and I am right at 18,000 pounds. I drove hard from Las Vegas through the Tehachapi pass to Lost hills on I-5 and hwy 46 west. I averaged 12 mpg hand calculated. This is better towing mileage that I have ever gotten. This turbo combo is a winner for stock to lightly programmed trucks!

Well after a few days of driving the truck around (unloaded), I have to say I am loving this turbo/upgrade. I am definitely going to have to dial back my PoD, since it seems like I have to barely push the accel to get moving. I drove home on Friday on a road where it is slow speed (40mph) with hills and I used to have to watch the EGTs and downshift (OD off) a lot, but not this time. Love it!

Good to hear the results are just as good with an automatic and different programming! Let Tom know as he is building up a customer reviews page.
