Couldn't decide which board to post this, because it relates to both... So, I'll take a chance here.

Considering what happened to my mother yesterday... It got me thinking. .

On gasoline vehicles, one of the most simple and effective theft deterents is to install a hidden switch "somewhere" that disconnects power to the 12v fuel pump. One of my better installations was a low profile switch mounted UNDER the carpet. It would have been next to impossible to find... unless someone happened to see you press the switch.

In the case of our Cummins... . I'm not sure what can be done... since the main fuel pump is mechanical. What circuit could be disconnected that would keep the Cummins from starting... Yet, it wouldn't disrupt the computer or anything like that.

What would you do?

If I wanted to install an (on/off) hidden mystery switch somewhere... . What would

I have rigged two switches. One interrupts the "pull on" circuit for fuel solenoid and the other interrupts the starter circuit just like having the shift lever in something other than P or N. I use relays for both circuits so there are no large wires necessary for the switches. If I leave the truck for a long time (airport parking) I remove the lid of the project box with the relays and disconnect the trigger wire from the relay for the fuel solenoid circuit. That way even if a thief finds both switches the truck still won't start. One of the switches is in plain view with a false label. The other is hidden so that I can reach it easy, but is still hard to find.

Easy way to disable the starter is to interrupt the circuit to the clutch safety switch with another hidden switch. Wiring diagram for most years shows a jumper wire in the same location for an auto. The clutch switch is easy to get to and on MOST years is a ground path, you will need only run one wire from the clutch switch to the hidden switch, the other wire to the hidden switch just needs to go to a nearby ground.

What about cutting power to the lift pump? Would the injector pump have enough stuff to pull fuel all the way from the tank?

Bill is right about the clutch safety switch wiring being an easy place to install your kill switch. In your case—with the A/T, you should have a jumper in place of the clutch safety switch.

Model year 2000 A/T has a 14 gauge yellow with red tracer jumper instead of the switch. I imagine that it is under the dash near where a clutch pedal rod would penetrate the firewall. I have a 5-speed so I have to guess on the auto. location. On model year 2000 the kill switch must be in series with the jumper (or clutch safety switch).

In case anyone doesn't want to trust wire-diagram interpretations, or,potentially disrupt any of the factory wiring functions (oops!)... . How about a large-capacity solenoid mounted to the fenderwell (like an old "brand F") in line with the main feed for the starter, triggered by a hidden button inside the cab? (for valet-parking, you might also have an on-off bypass that you could click so that the other guy doesn't have to find the button). --- no trip/ no crank!

I am not an electrical genius, but how about an electrical break from the battery to the starter. Have you ever been to the drag strip an seen any of the sub 12 sec. cars with a cut off switch mounted at the back of the car?? It allows for total electrical cut-off if a problem comes up that the driver may not see. My brother mounted one on a street car that was under the seat. It is a very heavy duty switch. You basically run your positive cable to one side of the switch and have another cable run from the switch to the starter. Only problem with this was that you loose all of the station presets on the radio!!!! Though this could be avoided with wiring the radio straight to the fuse box (I think..... ??????).

Just an idea, someone may know why this would not work. Good luck.

I thought about this when my beloved CTD quit on me a dozen times, just D-E-A-D, dead! Turned out to be a worn wire to the fuel solenoid, that was shorting onto an injector line. If you could splice a switch into that circuit, NO ONE could start it!

You mite do a search on this, I remember one who had his cigarette lighter wired. Push in to start and run, pull out to kill the system.
