Hey guys... This is my first post so go easy on me!! :)

First off let me say this site is awesome for gaining knowledge on my CTD... but. . I have a few questions.

I just ordered a set of gauges from Geno's garage, I got the Autometer Z series Boost, Trans Oil Temp, and Pyro gauges on a triple A pillar mount.

My first question is..... do I need to take off the exhaust manifold to drill and tap the probe hole?? I read on TST products site that they use a small telescoping magnet to get out the shavings. My buddy says he wouldn't trust that magnet to get out all the shavings. What do you guys suggest???

Next Question is. . what is a KDP jig and what does it do? I've been reading lots of posts about it and have no idea what your talking about!!

If you can see my Sig you'll see that I'm basically stock other then nerf bars and bed liner, but the more I read on TDR the more I feel myself heading down the dark side towards Bombing. I'm having a hard time explaining to the wife why I need a set of Rancho 9000's shocks for a truck that has only 8K miles on it. :-{}

Any suggestions on how to persuade the wife to let me step over to the Dark side?? :-laf

Thanks... Gary

Apply for a second (secret) credit card, have the bill mailed to the office. . :D

Welcome Gary,

It's useless to resist, give in to the Dark Side of the BOMB.

I used a shop vac held beside where I drilled for the Pyro probe. It caught 90% of the shavings. I also removed the 4 bolts holding the turbo and slid it enough out of the way to be able to clean out what the vac didn't catch. Use grease on the tap to catch the chips. Back it out, clean it off, and re-grease several times to minimize the chips in the manifold.

It's not hard to do but it's hard to get up the courage to drill holes in a perfectly good manifold. ;)

You don't need to remove the manifold ... just grease up the bit and tap real good and go slow ... I've done plenty this way ... then stick the mag in the hole and see if any got by ... normally not . . if you feel a bit squeemish ... just take the turbo off ... much less work that pulling the manifold ...

The KDP jig is basically a drill guide to instal a screw in the front cover to keep the cover alignment pin from walking out and inflicting damage. Mainly for the 94-98. 5 12v engines . .

Well, I started with an un-greased bit, but I weakly centerpunched the manifold due to fear of shattering the cast iron. Then the bit started walking. I panicked, leaned on the air drill, and before I knew it, was in the plenum before cleaning and greasing the bit a couple of times. ALL of the shavings went directly into the plenum.

Thanks to a handy magnet on a 2' flexible wire (I bought from Sears), I was able to fish all the way to the bottom of the turbine scroll and down to the #6 runner. It took 45 minutes until I pulled the magnet out 5 consecutive times with no shavings. I installed everything, said a couple of prayers, and started the engine. Everything was fine. I have driven (and towed) 20,000 miles since with no problems.

BTW the idea of the vacuum is a good one too.

If you don't mind flying metal particles in your hair, your eyes, down the front of your shirt, and all over the top of your engine you can let the truck idle while drilling the hole. Drill a pilot hole first then go for the final size. You will get a good exhaust leak out of it but the pressure will keep the shavings out of the turbo. Grease the bit when you get to almost all of the way through and it will catch the ragged pieces as you punch through.

Tap the same way, again using grease as you get the starter threads all of the way through. Just be sure to run the tap in about half a turn then back it up to clear the chips. Takes a while but it keeps the tap from seizing in the hole. Wear gloves as the exhaust gets a little warm coming around the tap.

You need to enter your signature and truck profile so we can see it. I clicked on your profile and did not see anything for your truck. Like was mentioned earlier, the KDP is a 12V problem, although I have read of at least one 24V that had it also.

Hey Koa Man..... I figured out how to add the sig. Thanks for the heads up. Told you I was a rookie!! :D

Other's..... thanks for the advice... lots of good pointers. It'll be interesting to see the look on my wife's face when I start tearing into our brand new ride!! :--)

Hey all you have to do to convence your wife about the shocks is to just let her ride in it. Mines not exactly a caddy!!!!:D

Sorry, I had to go there. They do ride rough.

I wasn't so lucky.....

While drilling for the 02 the drill bit shattered. I yanked the turbo and fished with a magnet, then used a shop vac, I tried everything except starting the truck. That's what I should have done. It seems the manifold tilts back slightly and a piece of the bit went in there. Magnet couldn't get it. Fired up the truck and that's one of the saddest sounds you ever want to hear. My advice if your not sure about contamination is to yank the turbo far enough off to put as rag in front of the exhaust outlet and fire up the truck for a second or two. That way you can be sure nothing is trapped in the manifold.

Luckily I changed the turbo on the 01 which left me with a spare we could use. So if anyone has an extra HY they don't want to use let me know. That way I can go back to stock if God forbid I ever have to go to the stealer for service.
