I have never seen this approach to keeping bolts tight. A possible solution for the ATS manifold bolts that won't stay put. A bit pricey but worth it if they work.

drilling and tie-wiring is more for keeping the pieces from leaving the vehicle in the event of coming out, isn't it? the mechanical bracket (stage 8) will prevent the bolt from loosening, unless the e-clip falls out!
 
Safety wire / tie wire will still allow the fastner to loosen, maybe not all the way but it will still come loose. I haven't taken the time to do it yet but for me to be able to drag my bike I have to safety wire everything, not to keep things from coming loose but to keep the fastners from falling out and landing on the track and or causing you to wreck. Maybe if ya took a heavy guage wire and were able to keep it taught on the tightning side of the bolt then it would work.
 
Actually safety wire should always be on the tightening side of the bolt and is there to keep fluids contained as well as keep fasteners in place. When I was roadracing any bolt that had fluids behind it (brake fluid, oil, coolant) had to be safety wired and it had to be in place properly to keep it tight. In many cases you would safety wire two bolts to each other.
 
What would it take to have a groove machined into a good set of bolts for the manifold? Whatever diameter needed to support an e-clip or a c-clip retainer. Seems like the next machine shop item (like the oversized banjos and intake replacement bolt with tapped boost fitting hole)
 
If you find a good self locking nut that isn't a fiber locking one it will work great. Especially if it is the type where the end is enlongated(looks like it was put in a vise and squeezed a little) Just make sure that you use a quality anti-seize also. If you don't want to pay for a quality anti-seize, you can always use Phillips Milk of Magnesia(sp) for an anti-seize. We use that on our turbines in a pinch if we can not get the technical data specified anti-seize. Works great.

the breslin lock washers are also available from McMaster-Carr.

The Nord lock washers (Breslin) have been around for a long time.

Seem to work well in applications where you aren't constantly removing them.
