Book Reviews on Turbocharging

"How many people are going to modify their trucks to run it on the jagged edge?"

Guess he hasn't spent much time around the TDR website :D

Looks like the "jagged edge" is a lot further out there on the Cummins engine :p

650 hp is interesting. That information will make Cummins owners feel good, but is only going to make the Navistar and Duramax owners defensive. An outright lie is easy to dismiss; it’s the half-truths that get ya. Well, we all know the Cummins is built like a battleship and can take abuse.

To that end, I should mention a recent correspondence with Cummins. I was somewhat dismayed at the lack of HP available in the 2002 Dodges, so I emailed Cummins. Their response:

Guess we wern't aware that Fords and Chevys were having Rams for lunch these days. Different OEM's define different product performace parameters and general specifications. As a supplier to Dodge, we recognize that they must define what such are to be for their products. One also has to ask oneself, "how long will high-output competitors last, in terms of engine durabilitiy - and, how much trouble with they have, in terms of reliability?" We have nearly twice the bearing area of some of these competitors and if you look at component size, e. g. : connecting rods, you have to ask youself how long they will really live. From our heavy-duty, commercial background we look more at cost-per-mile of operation than speed performance. Our recreational marine engine family usually has higher specific output engines - they have cool water for aftercooling and their durability expectations are less than commercial vehicles, as well as having more relaxed emissions requirements.

Also, the new engines are more powerful due to the investment in higher-buck fuel systems. We cannot say if the cost-per-horsepower is actually more favorable. You pay the price for the higher technology solution.

It's an interesting position furthering beliefs that it's an industrial motor fitted for a pickup truck.

It is funny to see these duramaxipad owners trying to dispute the study saying this is not real life application. What a bunch of cry babies. Also, I didn't notice any mention of VIN numbers.

Hmmm, let me think, lean injector mode? How do you kill a diesel by running it lean, you don't, unless you over boost the thing by screwing with the turbo. That sounds real shady to me. If you run a diesel lean, it is not gas, it does not run hotter, watch your egt gauge when you step on it (let more fuel in), then let off at the same rpm, where did the heat go? The fuel is off, no fire no heat. Except if they had unhooked the wastegates, and changed the turbochargers. Stock turbos on the big three engines could not over boost without a lot more fuel. Sorry for venting.

motor trend

have you read the article about the 03, in motor trend? they like the way it handled, and road, said that it was quite, but said it was not as well equipped and as pretty as the new Chevy inside. but, all in all, but they rated it between the GMC and Chevy as far as there ratings go's. why between those two? i don't know. i just felt that they have GM in there pocket. of course, stop and look the advertising of GM and the f brand in these mags.

just my Penny's worth.

Did anyone notice the TDP banner ads?

On the TDR the banner ads are for peformance stuff, when I went to the Diesel page they were "rebuilt engines, two year guarantee" and one from Kennedy Automotive, Having hard start, smoking, ect problems.

Hmmmm, makes me wonder.
