My 2002 HO Turbo Diesel sometimes will not start when I turn the key, It has happened a few times over the last month. If I wait or if I keep trying it will finally start. Cleaned the battery connections but issue is still there. Starter is still the original. Any Ideas?

Do NOT change the starter for an over the counter lifetime replacement unit. The OEM Denso units are far superior and generally only need to have the contacts and plunger replaced about every 100k miles.

Dunno that I can agree with you on that, Katoom- my OEM starter lasted 5 years with one set of replacement contacts. The NAPA replacement lasted NINE years and the replacement was free.

I'm always glad to hear something worked out for someone which goes against the grain but in reality what you experienced could be just coincidence..... I say that because if you research any problems people have with the OEM Denso starters you'll find that the odds of them having any problems besides worn contacts is very rare. And I mean VERY rare. But when you hear of people replacing their OEM starter with an over the counter lifetime replacement unit then they end up having to replace it many times over with repeated problems. Usually dragging starter speed being the number one problem too. The replacement ones just dont seem to hold up.

I'm with KATOOM here. I have 225, 000 miles on my 2002 original starter with one replaced set of contacts - I am the original owner. Over twenty years ago I put a Cummins 4BTA engine in a new 1991 Ford Pickup - that engine went over 380,000 miles and still had the original Nippendenso starter and contacts. Those starters are quality.
