Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Intermittent power loss - why?

My neighbor's 01 auto CTD has been losing power on occaision. He says it happens mostly while accelerating to highway speeds, but he's noticed it happen at lower speeds too - like when he puts it in 4 wheel drive and climbs the hill to his house. He says it usually happens right at 1500 RPM. The truck just loses power and won't get out of its own way. He can downshift (or put it in N and rev it a bit) and this will make the problem go away. I thought maybe it was wastegate sticking open, but it doesn't smoke when it happens and the CEL doesn't come on.



Ideas?

Have him check for codes. Sounds like the APPS or the injection pump.

APPS is pedal position sensor.

Reseting the APPS might help. Search for the procedure on the forums; sorry, I can't remember the particulars.
