I'm only posting this to thank Piers and support his business.

At my request, I had Piers build me a modified HY 35 9cm. J-hook and turnbuckle on wastegate.

Went to him for the install, which included adding an ATS manifold. We did a dry pavement pre-install baseline run up his test hill, and got 1200 pre-turbo. (this is consistent with what I'd been seeing... . I didn't do this 'cause I had egt concerns). Boost was 23 psi on what turned out to be a totally disabled wastegate, and a slight boost leak that I had thought was turbo whine... . duh!

Very wet streets after the install, so we didn't go back to the hill, but just fooled around on the roads. 1100 egt and 26 boost. Bill and Stefan K. drove it the next day on dry pavement.

It's been almost a month, and I've since added an AFE Mega-cannon. EGT's are ~1050 at wot. I think the AFE has contributed some, but in any event I just can't get the pyro over 1050.

I'm at sea level, don't tow, and run empty. The truck is amazingly reponsive... read fun... . feels like I've lost 1000 lbs. weight. Boost just flat jumps to 26psi, and I can't sense any serious drop off at the top end. I didn't have much smoke before, and now it's half, and zero if there is any boost. Fuel mileage after four tanks hasn't changed... . 14. 75 to 15. 50. We had hoped for improvement.

Obviously, this isn't everyone's turbo, but if you're bombed like me, you might want to give it consideration. Piers had a modified HX 35-12cm sitting on the bench for me, but we didn't even bother. Call Piers if you have questions.

What does he do to modify the HY35??

How much did the turbo run you?$?

Seems like spool up is even faster for ya Oo.

Is it me or is Piers a Turbo God ;)

Mactruck....

I don't wish to be evasive, but out of respect for Piers, I really suggest you call him. This is the only HY he's ever done, and I promised him I'd refer all price and technical questions to him. He didn't insist on this, it was my decision.

I will say that like always, Piers will treat you right.

Yeah, I think he's in a league of his own, plus he's one hell of a nice guy. Louise should get a lot of credit for that... . :)

Finally, a direct answer to your questions..... spool up is amazing. From the looks of your sig. , you might be a good fit for this.

Kat... yes, your point is well taken, but I don't have that kind of truck and don't plan to. Same day Stefan drove my truck I rode in his. Ask him how far and long out of the hole he thought I'd beat him... . ;)

Just two different guys with different styles and tastes.

Sorry didn't mean for that to come across the way it did. I was just trying to say once you feel the topend on a bigger turbo..... then you'll want it ;)

Kat....

Absolutely no offense taken:)

Piers quizzed/warned me about these very issues, and I listened real hard. Then, I told him go ahead, and after that I think he was as curious as me as to what we'd end up with. Like I said, it's not everyone's turbo, and this pretty much flies in the face of all of the hundreds of posts I've read over the past year on turbo's..... including yours... . I've even got your video's book-marked.

24V, your boost seems low.........

My stock HY gave me 32# of boost with mods similar to yours. Would max at 35 and settle at 32. Granted my truck weighs 11K lbs but I would think you'd get better than 26. I have a BHAF so intake should be similar to your cannon.

Anyway I just put on Piers modified hx-35 with a 14cm² non waste gated housing and I can't get the same boost out of it. Spool up is similar though. Curious if I should have gone with the 12cm². I have had it on only a few days and I'm taking it easy on it to let it break in a little. I'll see if it settles in some. So far the gains haven't been what I was hoping for. Come summer when the air gets hotter it may be of more use pumping cooler air into the cummins. I know my HY was very discolored from heat.

I must just be lucky

I have a 2001 4X4 auto QC with the HY35 I get 32 PSI of boost and cannot seam get hotter than around a 1000 deg pre turbo. Even on the dyno could not break 1100 deg's. I was told by a fellow TDR person that my pyro was bad, had the whole system checked and all was good. I must just have a cool running RAM :D

My truck gets 40 psi of boost with a stock turbo and TST box. Is this normal? Or is it because it is the HX35 turbo and you guys have the HY. Just wondering. I know with my box turned off it is around 20 normaly but with the box turned on it goes to 37 just about instantly when you go to wot, and on a hill it will peg my 40 psi gauge. Just wondering, truck runs great.

Tony

Tony, my truck goes to 36psi with stock unmodified HX35 and stays there and does not drop back until I let off the throttle or approach redline. This is with DD2s only & PS boost module, but I do have a 5" exhaust. With the stock exhaust it would top at 33psi and then fall back to 30.

Thanks Vaughn :)

That sounds good to me. I was starting to wonder if my gauge was messed up. How do you like the DD11's? Been thinking about getting a set now that I have the south bend clutch in. But I might be buying a house so that makes it hard to spend money on the truck.

Thanks, Tony

I have the the hy35 and and I get a spike of boost on 5x5 to 30psi and pegged at about 23. I use the turnbckle and spring (thanks Kat). I would like to get about 30 pegged out of this turbo though if i could.

Sky, Tighten the spring..........

I could peg 35#'s and maintain 32 with the HY. With the comp and 275's you should be able to do the same. Granted it was out of the efficiency range but when I had it lower I lost significant power. You might be surprised how much power you gain.

An Update Please !

24v-DSL That turbo sounds pretty good!! I personally find turbo lag annoying, especially when just running around town. I don't like leaving a cloud at every stop light. The other option is to brake torque to start the turbo spooling prior to every green light or stop sign. The problem with that is it runs up the trans temps and if I get carried away with boost then there are black tire marks instead of black smoke!

BTW, 30+ psi is easy with my HY turbo, if I turn up the comp box [not in sig. ], I can see close to 40 psi. More fuel = more boost. I'm planning on going to bigger injectors soon, so need more turbo. But I don't want to deal with any lag issues.

So with the 'Nasty Nine' can you stomp on the pedal from a dead idle and get almost zero smoke? And how fast does the boost come up? Do you get boost in 1/2 a truck length or a full truck length from a dead stop/dead idle??

An update on EGT's would be nice, any direct before and after comparisons?

Sorry for the long post. Greg L.

You realize that pushing the stock HY35 that high on boost is most likley hurting you more then helping you? It pushes the turbo out of its effciency map and your heating the air by spinning the turbo faster... ... ... I think the HY35 is within its effciency upto 30 psi?

Effciency Map

Hi Kat, I read that same information from many sources, so I decided to adjust my wastegate to open sooner.

Prior to the 'adjustment' I could see 35-40 psi when on 5/5 and pulling a load at WOT. The EGT would vary between 1350-1400*

After the 'adjustment' I had 30-32psi. Under the same load and temps, I was seeing 1400-1550* !!

So even though there is an 'Effciency Map' for the engineers and turbo designers, I feel that with my experiences and experiments that it borders on 'an old wives tale' [NO Flame Intended!]

I returned my wastegate to it's former setting, and I again I have to work the engine really hard to get to 1400*.

I'm still running in spingtime ambient temperatures of 40-60* F, so my situation may change with summer weather.

So for now at least I'm running happily at the higher boost #'s, and lower EGT's.

A new turbo is on the way, to go with bigger injectors. :D

Just my experiences and opinions Greg L

Lucky

I guess I'm 1 of the lucky ones... . I have an ISB that just won't get hot.

PE Comp

BD 2's

BHAF

Disabled waistgate(turnbuckle)

DTT T/C & V/B

At the drags, or on the street... I can't get over 1100. pre turbo, no matter what I do... Now maybe If I run 5/5 all the time, pulling a 10K load up a hill @ 80 MPH... I could see higher EGT's... . but why would I do that... It has plenty of power on 2/2. . The last time we all went to the drags, my truck was quicker than the guys running bigger turbos, and more goodies.

Now in an everyday sitiuation. . I still think the smaller turbo is the way to go... Most of my driving is stop, accelerate up to 45-50, slow down again... etc,etc,... I understand the top end rush... but if I'm 3 truck lengths ahead of you at the end of the road/strip. . I don't see the need for anything over, and above this little sampler size turbo that I have... Just for grins, last year I picked up an HX35 (Bigsaint). . And I've yet to even try it...

The unlucky part is that allthough I'm blessed with a low EGT truck... I also got one that gets crappy fuel mileage... It's still very hard for me to belive that trucks like mine are getting over 20 MPG.
