Good Grief now my VE is leaking! WTFN... Here I am gearing up to spend a few days bandaging up my 727, got a SFI flexplate and new converter, kit etc etc. And now the IP is leaking, looks like it is between the hyd. head and the pump housing too.

My 89 W250 is leaking in the same spot as you described beween the head and pump housing. I ordered a VE rebuild kit from www.dieselcare.net in hopes it is only an o-ring, but I have yet to tear into it.

Does anyone have any good rebuild instructions? I've found these instructions (http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5392) for a VE pump on a VW diesel but nothing specific for our trucks. Is there a specific timing mark/spot for the engine before pump removal?

Yeah, that post came up a few months ago. It seems to be the definitive pump rebuild pictorial right now. Would be nice if one of our own 1st genners would do the same for a 6 cyl… ;) Sorry, I can't be of any help to you sdstriper… :(

Over on the V/W diesel forum they are saying you can loosen the screws on the head and slide it out just far enough to expose the oring and cut off the old one, clean the groove and slip a new one on over the pump head and tighten the screws and you are good to go. I haven't tried it but they say they are even doing them on the side of the road. The pump is the same as ours except we have two more lines. They say the internals are not disturbed that way. Don't know but????

I don't know what to think on that one. BGilbert? What do you think? I looked at the breakdown schematics and think it looks challenging enough in a small messy shop let alone still on the truck! There are alot of parts in there, to include springs n things... We all know what happens when you play with springs n things...

I am going to pull the pump and do the KDP. What all should I buy for the KDP, front cover gasket and seal? I can fab a tab or heavy wire etc. for the dowel.

Any thoughts on pulling the pump? From what I read I think the key would end up down if I use the timing pin? The company I ordered the dial indicator adapter from sent me the wrong item so looks like I get to fumble around to get TDC!

When i get back from my annual treck to the smokies over Christmas I am going to try it on my spare pump, I think if you only loosen the screws enough to expose the oring it may work. We will see.

I honestly dont see how you can remove the head enough to slip the old o-ring out and new one in without upsetting the rollers and their washers. There just isnt that much slack in there. Half the rollers fell out when I took my head off, but the other half stayed, so I had something to look at and compare. I wouldnt do it on the engine for sure. Bad enough in a clean storage room and good light with everything cleaned off.

I hear you dpuckett, I'm not going to chance the headache on my first time. I am planning on taking the pump off and taking my time. I got some springs and things coming too, they didn't come in yesterday, hope today's the day. Exploration learning curve here I come... Nothing quite like the lack of underconfidence ehh?

The Bosch seal kit came in today, much better than the cheaper no name brand that I am sure came from China. The Bosch kit has more gaskets in it, the other is just seals, o-rings and washers(banjo sealing washers). And it was only a couple bucks more. Here we go...

striper. Thanks for the reply on my thread. Have you started this yet? I would like to know what things you did to remove the pump. Let me know! Thanks!

Always Something...

No I didn't get after it like I wanted, as usual... I couldn't get the one bolt up in never-never-land so I put the 4" exhaust on instead. My three year old says "Stinky D" is too loud now! Heh heh... Then the wifes transmission started acting up so I had to check into that. I hope to get into the pump in the next couple of days, tomorrow I am hitting the pawn shop for some "Special Bent Wrench" candidates.

Thanks! I have been eyeing a set of these for awhile and never really needed them. I'll tell the wife it was your idea to buy her a set for Christmas...

Nothing says "I love you" like a set of wrenches, SD! :-laf

Hey I even got a deal on them at Napa of all places! $16. 00 bucks for a 10 pc. set, size 10 thru 19 and they have the extra little nub kinda like line wrenches! I like the quality for the money.

dpuckett, deal or no deal I think you may be in hot water over this one... :D

sdstriper, your wife is too far away to get me in hot water (or she ought to be):-laf. Also, dont forget the 3" extension. You going to make it to SOP-IV? You'd fit right in.
