Is 3" exhaust enough?

What is the diameter of the stock exhaust on the 1995?



Mine needs replaced and I can get a complete 3" system, including muffler in 304 stainless steel for $325. Is 3" big enough? He can't go bigger.

According to my wife, 3" is never enough. That's why I went with the 4".

With the mods you have listed 3" is plenty, and the price for 304 is OUTSTANDING.

Pennsylvania inspection

Another question in addition to what size original exhaust and whether 3" is big enough...



Do any of you guys in Pa know whether it is a requirement to have a muffler to pass inspection?



If so, I was thinking of having the guy put the new muffler in with flanges so it can easily be replaced with a straight piece of pipe.

Stock exhaust is said to be good for up to 600 lb/ft of torque. Personally, I can't speak for performance as I'm running stock but of the systems I've heard, I like the sound of a 3" exhaust better than 4". A 4" system sounds deeper with less growl. A 3" system isn't as deep sounding but has a thick Harley like growl to it. I like 1 3/4" pipes as apposed to 2" pipes on a Harley for the same reason. But that's only my ever so humble opinion.

For that price I think I'd go for it if I needed an exhaust system.

Stock exhaust on a '95 is 3" turbo to cat, 4" cat to muffler, 3" muffler to 4" tip.

The rule of thumb I've heard is to use 4" if you are going over 350hp. Ties in with what Steve M said about torque.



The only question is: are you going to do any more bombing? If so, the 3" may not be big enough, otherwise it sounds good to me.

There is a 4" system available for about $400. 00 new. Dont know if its ok to tell who has it here or not but it might be in the vendors adds. Here is the web site.

Has anyone hooked an manometer up to the exhaust post-turbo to compare backpressure between 3" and 4" pipes?

Here's a thought. Go ahead with the 3" SS system. If (or when) you get to the point that more is needed find a 4" downpipe and then add another 3" system and run dual exhaust. Sounds as though you can get custom bending?



Rip's system is aluminized steel and he uses an Allied truck muffler. I just put the Allied muffler in my truck and it really sounds good. Much better than a straight pipe, IMHO.



BTW, I noticed my stock exhaust system is SS from the turbo to the muffler.

That sounds like a good plan John. If sometime in the future I want to go to a 4", I can make it into a dual pipe system (mmm - stacks?? ) or just take the whole 3" off and sell it to someone else. It should always be in good shape beings that it's 304 SS.



I'll go and check this guy's work out in the next couple weeks or so. If I like it, I'll give you guys the information so anyone else can go there too. He's located in Edinboro, Pa.
