It seems they are working on it. We had some armed visitors show up to our Camp Sat night. We plied them with cold Tecate's. This was on the beach about 7-8 miles from Colenet.

That's a very disturbing account of a nightmare experience. Thankfully,they lived to tell it. Efforts are being made to make it safer for the tourist down there. My friend's been telling me of the stepped up presence of law enforcement and much more friendly migration stops. What must be noted here was the callous attitude of our officials upon their return to Tijuana. My wife and I got shaken down in Tecate three years ago,and had the same uncaring"told you so" attitude by the customs guys on our side. Travel in the daylight and in a group and you should be fine. I grew up traveling down there on surf trips and have well over two-hundred trips under my belt from one-dayers to two-weekers. In most instances,I deserved the hassle I received from the officials down there. Those times have changed,so you've got to play by more conservative rules.

We have had a few incedents but it seems the supervisors have been told not to hassle americans. We were well treated by the military as they inspected our trucks. If that is what it takes to keep the cartells some what in check than so be it.

This is why we don't go to Mexico anymore... . tired of gun-totin' 15 year old kids in military outfits stopping us for no apparent reason... we now travel to Costa Rica... where they sincerely like us... .

IMO, Mexico is going to **** in a hand basket.

My wife and I have loved traveling down there for many years, but not anymore.

We had very close call with a gang of about 10-12 young street thugs ( 12-16 yrs. old) just outside the tourist area of Nogales, Mex. a few years back. They wanted her purse and our cameras.

After being put in fight or flight situation, I took an aggressive stand against them. They were all laughing, and pushing each other towards me, but not able to get a gang attack going. After a very long minute or two, they all laughed, and ran away. Thankfully, I'm a pretty good size guy, and I think I was able to intimidate them somewhat.

Believe me, my heart rate was up for quite a while after that.

It's getting worse everyday down there, 400 people per month are being murdered/decapitated. Gov. corruption and drug cartels.

We all have our reasons for going or not going to Mexico... ... ... ... ...

Where else can you drive through the dirt on a near endless supply of dirt,drink local beer that is some of the best,with a group of your friends that would get you locked up here in the states ?

We have a plce to stay on the beach far enough south to be away from the border to avoid the border issues for $15 a night. Home cooking for a lil bit more. We can off road at whatever pace we choose North,south or east from there Oo.

I have never driven into Mexico. I went a couple times with parent in the 80's. I remember not being able to drink the water and getting sick as a dog anyway and we went from airport to hotel compound and never left hotel grounds unless with hotel sponsored tour group with "guide" who even I could tell was carrying concealed.

Sounds like it is just getting worse.
