I currently run a 12 valve in a 93 4x4 getrag, have over 400kms and the old girl has been great. I am now looking for a 2nd gen truck and wondered if there where some motors better than others?

Ones that are 53 blocks are prone to cracking...

Yep,

I'de try to avoid the 53 but... . I wouldn't let it stop you if you found a good deal! The failures are minimal if you look at the numbers of them on the road... Of course, if I had mine fail my opinion might be different! If they can be avoided I would! My 53 has 201,000 miles on it... . Knock on wood!

As far as fuel systems go..... they are all bad! I would count on adding the cost of a new LP and most likely a Vp-44 to the cost. If you could check the fuel pressure before you buy that would be a good idea too!

This Website should help you when it comes to the 53 Block. As far as the lift pumps and the Vp's, It's hit or Miss, I was running a factory Vp for 130k miles, added a TST for 20k then added the Fass and Mach 6 Injectors and a silver Bullet turbo for another 20k and still had no problems on a 2000 3500, now my 01 2500 had a VP replaced 2 months before I bought it, threw the TST and FASS on at the same time and has taken a dive with only 30k miles on it.

just the 53 block, but do ur homework. any diesel could be a dud if treated wrong!!! but good on you for stickin to CUMMINS
