A Geno's customer called withthis question. Thus far no official response from Cummins

Can the TDR audience share any Do It Yourself stories?

Thanks in advance, Robert Patton

Robert,

There was a discussion on here a while back about this. Steam Cleaners / Pressure Washers have been used with some success. I don't feel that a cleaning of that nature is going to last very long as you really can't get to the outer perimeter because the DPF necks down.

I have called several facilities in the area including my Cummins Distributor that have DPF cleaning equipment inquiring about their ability to clean the Dodge style DPF. Cummins said no way, a couple of independants with cleaners said they could do a cleaning with limited success.

The problem is in the design, the cleaning equipment is designed to be used for cartridge style DPF units. I feel that there is a market for a replacement DPF unit that has removable ends as the big trucks do.

It is not reasonable to sell a 500,000+ mile truck for 50,000. 00+ dollars equipped with a DPF that is not designed to be cleaned easily.

Mike,
I agree with you; also the DPF is I believe designed to be a throw away component. Once it has reached the end of it's serviceable life it is to be replaced with a new component.

I was looking on line the other day and Advance Auto Parts was selling a Walker DPF for all $2,200+ but I do not know if it will fit a Ram Truck. O'Reilly Auto Parts is selling a Walker DPF for $1675. that will fit an 07. 5MY truck since these are the same until at least MY09 it should work for most trucks.

In the Navy when we do a a GTM or GTG Gas turbine change out, at the Shipyard. The Engines are remove from the Engine modules and put into a Shipping container and shipped to the depo and overhauled and reused. So the EPA with all there clear air Environment regs, and Dodge is are just throwing the old DPF away. Seems you can set up a overahul and return system service program would be a lot better. But what do i know. Rant over with.

Detroit Diesel offers the DPF cartridge as a Reman, Cummins has begun to do the same.

Have high core values... ... .

For example a common DDE DPF Cartridge is priced as follows. .

DDE RA6804908692 $825. 00 Exchange

Core Charge is $1500. 00 which is returned if a good core is turned in.

Detroit Reman has taken a hit with hidden damage on some cores but remain gentlemen by sticking with published core acceptance criteria.

I recently spoke with a local shop (Cincinnati radiator) and was quoted several prices to clean the dpf.
If I recall:
~$150 for a standard cleaning plus a charge of:
~ $83 to cut open the dpf and weld back up (dodge specific dpf)
if it was really dirty the cost went up:
~$308 to bake it in the special oven plus the cut/weld charge.
They did not guarantee success.....

Shopping around I have seen dealers on the net charge $1500 - $2100 and a $200 core charge.

Since we have to live more and more with the emission equipment at least they could make it serviceable and more wallet friendly to the average consumer... ... ...

What drives the cost of the DPF? Is it the manufacturing process or the materials cost?

None of that. The replacement cost is base on what the parts manufacture and or car company thinks the market place will support in price realization. I have seen a small fitting say 3/8 STOR PORT (straight thread o-ring) cost $20 and a simillar one only slightly larger ½ STOR Port sell for $16. There is no rhyme or reason in setting selling price but they also look at what other manufactures are selling a simillar one for.

There is an independent shop next to us at work and one of the guys was down today having issues with a maxxforce 11. He said he said he had cleaned the Dpf. I asked how and he said he removed it and took it to the car wash. Said they had done it to 3-4 other ones with no problems. Time will tell how long before they plug up again.

hi there we a truck dealer in il. that has a dpf cleaner . do you mined share the # of the shop you are talking about . because every place we have talked to could not give us a spec #s on the cleaning .

when I was in business I was approached by Donaldson, to become a DEF service center... the process including washing the loose soot and a cycle in a cleaning oven to burn off the soot and other chemicals attached to the Filter.. than it was through a vacuum and flow tester... each DEF had a specific flow rate and if the filter failed the flow rate it was back through the cycle the second time....

We really considered it if, that is if the State of WA pushed to mandate emission systems on all diesel equipment, graders, dozers, off road equipment and them forcing the installation of the equipment back 10 years on the trucks... Like what has happened in CA... The state never passed the laws so we passed on the system... Hope this over view helps..

Howdy all,
thought I would throw in my two cents on DPF cleaning. I removed DPF and EGR from my 2009 C&C almost 8 years ago and decided to reinstall them back in Aug 2017. Reinstall went well, except the DPF must have been close to needing regen when I removed it and after setting 8 years must have hardened up good (read as bad). So I researched and found Mopar turbo cleaning fluid and a special tool, used to cost several hundred dollars, but thanks to after market, cost a little over a hundred dollars. So, I removed the front pressure sensor on the DPF, connected the cleaner hose into it, ran the cleaner hose up to the engine bay, started the truck, and ran two cans of the cleaner into the DPF. After empting the two cans, I reinstalled the pressure sensor after letting the DPF cool down, and ran the truck down the interstate about 60 miles. It cleaned the DPF and now have normal regen cycles. There is an expensive German setup called Liqui Moly that would work too.

Anyway, the setup I used worked. You cans find YouTube with DPF cleaning demos too. Hope this helps, Ron

Hey Wiredawg. Any chance you can share where you purchased the cleaning kit (special tool)? All I can find is the miller product that costs around $600.
