I would advise not going with deep discharge batterys all around. You can't buy one battery type that will do both jobs well. A diesel needs high starting currents for a short period of time but will not handle deep discharge. An Rv or Golf cart battery can't handle high currents used for starting but will allow continious discharge of 5 to 20 amps all the way down to 10 volts without damage. Put your extra RV batteries batterys (try 6 volt golf cart batteries) in front of the weel well in the truck bed. It easy to fit 4 of them 2 on each side. Use a disconnect switch or isolator to prevent dischargining the truck batteries.

And Yes do use a larger gage wire #6 or better yet #4 gage straight from the truck battery with a breaker or fuse right at the battery where I would also mount a disconnect switch in case you have a short or overload. You would also want a overload device at the batteries in the bed between them and the camper
