Hello guys,

I'm in the process of installing an Isspro EV pyro #3607TR with one problem. The threads on the brass thermocouple is a 1/2-18; confirmed it with a thread gauge. My personal tap and die set has only 1/2-13 and 1/2-20. I've called several hardware and auto parts store on the island and nobody has a 1/2-18 tap. At first, I thought it might have been a metric thread, being that those gauges are manufactured in India. I double checked it on the thread gauge. I noticed in other posts there are 1/4 or 1/8 threads on the pyro installation. My thermocouple has an adjustable depth, which is why it's so large. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Aloha from Hawaii -

I believe you need a pipe tap. If I remember correctly mine was a pipe thread hole. I hope this helps. If yours is like this then you need a tapered pipe tap and then dont cut it in too deep or the hole will he too big.

How are you mounting yours(pre-turbo or post)

Any good tips on keeping the shavings from falling down into the manifold?

TX Gooseneck,

I am mounting it pre-turbo. Will drill s-l-o-w-l-y with grease on the bit and later use my Shop Vac and fish some more with a magnet; I've read this method in other posts.

Thanks for the heads up, Michael. On my way to the hardware store now for some nuts & bolts. Will check to see if they have any pipe taps. I was wondering why it was a weird pitch and nobody who stocks taps and dies had such a size.

Take magnet and lay it beside where you are drilling. Maybe get an old speaker magnet, then you could put magnets all around where you are drilling. Then just before going through clean everything up. After cutting through then you can fish with a small retrevial magnet.

Thats all I did.

Hey Michael,

Guess what? Just got back from City Mill (hardware chain here in Hawaii) and lo and behold, I bought a 1/4 NPT tap. I wasn't thinking at all about the thermocouple being a compression fitting, it's NPT, not NC or NF. Duh! :-laf In the excitement of wanting to hurry and install the thermocouple, I merely took my caliper and measured the thickness of the brass fitting itself, then took a thread gauge to get that measurement. That's how I came up with a 1/2-18. No such animal. All the time it was a 1/4-18 NPT. I measured incorrectly. It's storming outside as I type this and no longer have the ambition to start working on my truck. The nice part of it is that the tap came with its own drill bit. Hope your day is going good. Just wanted to say 'thanks again' for your input.

Aloha -

Why don't you just bring your truck over to my place, Matt. We can pull it in the garage and turn on the heat. :-laf :D :-laf So what is the temp around 70*+? Right now its about 15*F and snow on the ground here.

Glad to hear you found the right part. I can't imagine living where you do and trying to get somethings done. Glad to hear you found the right tap.

Easy enough.

Matt, what pod did you go with? My dual a-pillar should be here tuesday, along with boost/egt, GSK and POD's!:D

Hi TX Gooseneck,

I didn't want pods because of the angle they sit at. Supposedly, Autometer has a better view angle than Isspro but, I have my gauges lined up in front of me on the top of the dash in individual mounting cups from Isspro. I'm just used to this configuration because I had the same setup in my '67 VW Bug back in the mid 80's. Also, the Isspro EV gauges have a glare when view from too much of an angle but, are clear when viewed straight on. The lenses are convex and contribute to its 'nighttime' clarity. I'd post some pics, however, the weather has been wet n' ugly :( here in Paradise so I'll have to get around to it later. Hope you're having a good day.

Michael,

As a matter of fact, the outside temp. is about 70-ish. Anything below 65 is freezing for us Hawaiians and I can't even begin to comprehend 15*! I use the A/C all the time and rarely use the heater in my rig. I'll keep you posted on my progress as soon as I get everything installed and working.

Aloha-

Ahhh 15* is easy, its when it gets below zero, the wind is blowing about 25 mph, and its trying to snow. That's when being a mighty midwesterner gets hard to pull off. Life would be kinda boring if it was always 60 pr warmer. Thats what I love about living here. About the time I am tired of a season it changes to another one. Its never too hot, too cold, to wet, or too dry for too long.

Good luck with the installs, just remember about that pipe tap if you never have used one. Maybe start cutting threads and the test fit the fitting for the pyro. Don't want to go too deep, unless you want an ATS manifold!!!

I have the a-pillar pods and autometer gauges, and even being 6'1" the guages really point to above my head. When I do it again they are either going on the dash or in it. Up the a pillar in my truck the gauges aren't angles correctly.

i checked 3 stores before finding my tap. i believe the threads match the threads on air tools and compressors. my uncle is a diesel tech and he told me to make sure the manifold is cool before you drill and tap. i drilled dry til i got near the bottom. then grased the bit. when i tapped i packed the voids in the tap with grease. just make a few turns the check the coupler for clearence. i found it helpful to clean and regrease the tap everytime i checked. good luck man.

check out the tst site. i used the instructions form them. they are very easy to fallow

Thanks for the info, BTighe. I have purchased a 1/4-18 NPT tap and will tackle the install as soon as time permits.
