Looks like it's slinging off the inside of the pulley. So I did some shopping keeping in mind what I've been reading here on the TDR about water pumps. I'm rolling the dice on
Bosch 97083 @ $32.79 and a Gates 33915 stat @ $14.93 from rock auto.
The box came and I got a new USA not rebuilt pump and a USA stat. I'll be getting some fresh GO5 locally and it'll be time to get busy.

I have used Rockauto almost exclusively for the past 2 years for all of my repairs that I can wait for the Fedex dude to show up. No problems. And I use them a lot, probably 2x's or more a month.

Good info, especially that the Bosch WP is US made.
Think I'll get one next time I order something from RA.

Between Rock and Summit racing (they have an unbelievable selection of stock replacement parts)You can get some great deals. With rock, you have to watch the shipping if you're ordering many items. I've canceled carts where they wanted to ship 3 or 4 parcels. Summit only charges once, regardless of where it comes from.

I hope the non-Cummins thermostat works our for you, they are nothing but problems for most.

I replaced my water pump last month and used Cummins, it was a LOT more! How can the prices be so different? I didn't buy it from Dodge, that would have made it even more. Cummins markup isn't that big, so how can Bosch even make a unit and a profit for that much less?

Yep. Rolling the dice on that one. I'll rip it right out if I have to. I'm big on OE stats and sensors. I got a mopar stat for the Durango recently. It was motorad inside. :(

Well, I had a window of opportunity last evening. I opened the garage at 4:40 and closed up a bit after 7. Job went real smoothly. The pump was leaking from the weep hole, and the bearings were quite shot. It's so hard to see up in there. I make it an annual inspection to back off the tensioner and spin all the idlers and such. Not once did I ever check the WP. That's the last thing I thought would go- not the first
I gotta say, once the airbox and alternator were out of the way, it was a snap. No gaskets to scrape, real pleasure. I also changed the thermostat. I have a picture I will add later, but the OE and the Gates I put in look identical. I think it's going to be good.
This time, I had no coolant loss and no drain valve issue. This job came right on track for the second coolant change. Some may remember what happened on my first coolant change. Thankfully, I had no such issue this time around. I used Zerex GO5 50/50 again. My hours were 38xx.

Just replaced my Gates Water pump with another Gates this past Friday. The pulley on the pump was broken ! Only 34,000 miles, let's hope this one lasts a bit longer!!!

What kind (brand) of thermostat does Cummins' use? I changed mine last fall with what ever Geno's offered...

I don't know the OE supplier for Cummins. The replacement looks awfully close. So far, so good. Much quicker heat.

What was your indicator that something was wrong? Did it throw the belt?

Funny story. Was picking up a friend at a local repair shop (he was dropping off his truck for service). I was stuck in morning traffic and I noticed smoke or steam coming from under the hood! I was hoping it was the melting layer of ice on the sheet metal, got to the shop, popped the hood- radiator fluid all over the front half of engine!!! Left my truck there and my friend ended taking me home!!! Yes, I believe it was a bad belt (roughly 50,000 miles on it).The mechanic did say the groves where worn down a bit and believes the belt was not seated properly on the water pump pulley. I need to keep an eye out on those belts!!!

The pulleys just break. The Gates WP's are not that good of quality and are problematic. Went thru 2 of them on different trucks at about 30k, went back to Cummins and got a new one. Problem solved.

The one prior to this one failing I did, this past friday the mechanic installed the new one. I did have a new Cummins pump on my shelf, did not have the time to run it up to the mechanic (had to be on a job site!). My mechanic did call me before he installed the new pump and said if it was okay to install both a Gates water pump and fan belt, (he knows I'am a little picky with what parts go back into my trucks). He's the same guy that has worked on all my trucks and cars for the past ten years, (by the way he's the guy that will be installing my free spin kit on Jan 27). The pump's pulley had a lot of play, about 1/4" to each side.

So frank, the pulley did not just split. The bearing failed? I have a hard time believing a hunk of iron would fail like that.
