Just realized there was a second page to this but I leave it anyway.



The engine and trans, and maybe t-case, as a unit are twisting oposite the drive shaft direction of rotation against the rearend. I'm not sure but I would say that with a remote mount trans as in a porsche 944 that the direction of torque put out by the motor would always be to the same side or direction. Hope I have this right and that it helps.



I can think of one other reason that can cause extra wear. It is usually a slightly high ratio than 1st and thus requires more sliping of the clutch to get started. That and people seem to engage and disengage the clutch to control speed in reverse.

I haven't seen the issue and am in Vegas for a couple weeks, so won't see it for a while. I don't know what got messed up in translation. Someone else e-mailed me that a couple photos got into the issue upside down. I see no one on this forum commented on that, assuming it happened. So, I guess ya'll get a C, not an F but not an A either :D The problem in reverse comes mostly from the on-and-off power application that often occurs. It tends to hammer the plate attached to the hub against the stop pins of the carrier.



Gee, and all this time I thought no one even bothered to read my articles :rolleyes:

The picure was right side up, it was the print that was upside down :-laf

Joe D, I ALWAYS read and appreciate your articles and knowledge. The resident infomercial, Sam M (for fear I wont say his full name :-laf ) I never read.
 
The pictures really looked screwy at first until I was showing something to my girl and had the mag up-side-down and realized the pictures looked better. I thought I would make myself dizzy reading the article and flipping the mag to see the pics.
 
OOPS, my first post in a long time. I guess I had better get around to updating my signature to my new truck. A '98 quad short bed 12 valve. Oo.

Re-read the line before that sentence. It says, quote, "The potential dow-sides to such friction materials [in reference to the LuK ceramatallic clutch material] are greater wear of the flywheel and pressure plate ring; and hasher engagement, a tendency to shudder on egagement where some slippage is needed, like backing up a heavy trailer. End quote.



So, it is the shuddering on engagement, not the actual load of the trailer once the clutch is FULLY engaged and not jerking the truck because the clutch can't slip. And since the springs that dampen the hub aren't active in reverse (not the truck movement, just from the clutch plate jerking back and forth)), the shuddering causes the hub to hit the pins.

No loss in translation. Aside for the words in the [ and ], it is a direct quote from the mag.
