The engine and trans, and maybe t-case, as a unit are twisting oposite the drive shaft direction of rotation against the rearend. I'm not sure but I would say that with a remote mount trans as in a porsche 944 that the direction of torque put out by the motor would always be to the same side or direction. Hope I have this right and that it helps.
I can think of one other reason that can cause extra wear. It is usually a slightly high ratio than 1st and thus requires more sliping of the clutch to get started. That and people seem to engage and disengage the clutch to control speed in reverse.
