"LUGGING?" - why not?

How much info can you get from a vin?

I hope this is correct place to post. I'm looking for a new radio for a John Deere 4630. OEM is not impressive , but there is absolutely a fitment issue. Local farm supply store does not stock aftermarket . Of course John deere does, but I hoped some of you might know of some good deals. Source and price would be appreciated.

I recently installed an aftermarket radio in a JD 3830 windrower using a John Deere mounting kit and everything fit fine. I haven't been in a 4630 in a long time but the later mount kits seem a bit larger than the older ones, but still install in the same space on the ceiling. The kit I got had two mounts, one with a large square hole and one the older style with the knob holes on the sides of the opening. For the stereo I just sent my wife to an electronics store with the JD mount so I didn't have to deal with the 18 yr old sales twerp ;) If you already have a radio installed maybe just the mount from a 50 or 55 series tractor and an aftermarket stereo. The last time I checked prices JD was VERY proud of a very average radio, I think I spent less than 200. 00 and its nearly as good as Deeres top of the line unit in my 7800.

After typing all that I just remembered that the older radios had a single speaker in the mount, the later systems with the two speakers behind your head are much better and well worth converting to even if you're not into high quality sound.

There should be plenty of room as long as you don't get one that is the DIN or shaft type. Depending on how the mount is made, the trim piece for the radio may stick past the mount if you have a shaft type (It did for me).

In the '73 4430 that I use, it came with the factory 8-track, so we already had the 2-speaker set-up. The paper cones were shot so we got some new factory speakers.

Had to move the machine today, so I pulled it right into aftermarket car stereo place along the route I was driving. My old unit fits 9x9 hole cut into ceiling. Speaker is glued to grille right behind radio [no enclosure at all] The radio sort of fits [at an angle] into this hole.

Anyway, the tech showed me how much better an enclosed speaker sounds and sold me a plastic radio mount that fits over the hole in the ''ceiling''

I think that now I will simply fire up the Delta tablesaw and make a one piece mount for the radio and two speakers. It will cover the whole mess of the hole in the ceiling and get some decent sound -- hopefully.

Thanks for your input -- BTW the injector pump on the ole 46 sure looks like it came off a 12 valve!
