Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Just got the new TDR mag.....Oil cooler article....

So got the new mag last night and was reading over the oil cooler failure article right in the beginning. How many of you guys have had your oil cooler fail and cause the coolant oil mixing issue? This was the first I had heard of this failure and from what I took out of the article it seemed to be more of a common failure than a blown head gasket causing the oil/coolant mixing. I change my coolant just about every other year or so, but is this something I should be concerned about failing? Just curious as to what you guys have experienced.

Never been a problem. I have 2 '95-3500s and 12 more in the shop from 95 to 04 and have never had a problem. Have one with 812,000 actual miles on it, no problem, original engine (6 transmissions, but original engine). I have never heard of this one involving the oil cooler.....

Personally I think they very rarely fail. I have know of one person to have an issue with it.

Interesting replies so far... ... I wonder why they made it sound like such a somewhat common problem if there is a oil/coolant mix going on. Good to hear it isn't common from our fellow members so far, especially you PKemp, sounds like you would have a good number of vehicles to reference from.

I have a friend who runs a delivery service over in Alabama. He runs 10 CTDs and they average from 94 to 03 and one with almost a Million miles on it. I called him about this issue and he has never heard of it either.

Over the years I have read a few post that there was oil in the coolant. Turned out to be the oil cooler but some turned out to be a blown head gasket.

I just found a BUNCH of Oil in my Coolant this evening. Not sure of the cause yet. Had my truck towed back to the Dealership.

I have coolant leakiing from the oil cooler housing. Very small leak and I am going to replace the gaskets when i change the oil next week. Funny that at 100,000 miles I have had the reat trans seal leak and now the oil cooler leaking coolant when i have not had any other prob lems to speak of. Oh yea, I now have the 0237 and 1693 codes to contend with since it id due for the smog check by the Kommifornia Air Nazi's. But I still love this truck.
