People here heartily recommend to STAY AWAY from the K&N air filters...
There have been cases where an improperly oiled K&N filter lets through unfiltered air thus causing damage to the cylinders, rings etc. (ie $$$$$).
This is not necessarily to say that it is a bad filter by design (though some people will argue that it is), but it DEFINITELY that it takes a competent and careful mechanic to to maintain it correctly and prevent engine damage. It is probably not worth the trouble to get an oiled type filter at all when there are so many oiless choices out there that offer BOTH excellent filtration with ease of use (ie replacement)

Most members here will recommend doing a PSM type airbox mod (ie cut multiple small or a single 4" hole in the bottom of your oem airbox) and then run the cummins approved Mopar "double thick" air filter...

Sorry no time for part#'s right now, but if you do a search on PSM CAI, or even K&N you will find plenty of info... remeber the forum search feature is your freind for finding info... not that you can't ask if you are having trouble searching. I'll try to post some links later!!

There has been alot of talk on different form's about K&N filter's and most will say Stay away from them they do more Damage then good to our truck's . Running a K&N is like useing a Fram filter IT"S A NO NO

Totally agree, say no to K&N.



Nothing wrong with OEM paper filters.
 
I hate to stir up anything but in the latest March/April 2011 Mopar magazine in an article titled Manifolding page 41 are two Cold Air Intake Systems P/N770003AC & 77060007AB factory approved air cleaners & they sure look like K&N or AFE filters. One is for the 5. 7 Magnum, 300C & Charger the other is for the 4. 0L Wrangler. They have the big M & MOPAR on them. I know they didn't mention any diesels but someone at Mopar must like them. I will still use OEM filters for my truck.

I have a AFE stage II a good product but would say you would be better off to modify the the factory airbox and use a paper filter for ease of replacement and piece of mind. I don't feel like I got any more mpgs or power could just hear the turbo more. A CFM air intake is were I would recomend you improve the air flow for the same money. It will lower egts about 50-75 degrees and about . 25 mpg gain not much no aleast something. Glacier Power I think dynoed several air intakes and it showed to be the best added about 40hp on a modified truck. Check for air intake comparisons.
 
On my twin setup from ATS, there is a cotton pleated, oiled filter similar to K&N. I've cleaned it and oiled it with K&N oil in the past. Is that any different or better than K&N, or is it just the fact that it is cotton/oiled that seems to cause a problem. My truck doesn't get off road very often and my oil analysis shows no silicon (dirt) at 10,000 intervals. If it IS a problem, I wouldn't have an issue switching to a paper unit or a non oiled unit that fits.
 
WOW!!!!!!!!!! Good thing I never have to go off road! I'm going to have to find a way to run a filter minder on my setup, and see what I can do to change filter styles. Hope I can find one in the dimensions I have...
 
One must remember, the testing that was done by "Teststand" Corporation was conducted in July of 2004, nearly seven years ago! Many things have changed since then, such as the Amsoil TS-123, an "Oiled Foam" type filter, is not even made anymore, as the Amsoil Company discontinued it in 2004.

That's a really cheap shot to post a link to actual independent testing of most of the commonly sold and often mentioned air filter brands. The independent testing clearly proves what many of us have been telling them for years.

Most of the guys here who use and brag on those very brands will not read the test results so I guess it won't harm their inaccurate beliefs and false claims so no harm done.

Thanks for posting the link. I enjoyed reading the test results.

Instead of using test results done in a lab and not in the real world, I have been my own lab. I have used a K&N since my truck was new. It and other mods helped me lower temps that were too high for me when my truck was stock. Here are the lab results from three tests covering close to ten years.
