K&N Filters, Any proof they are better?

It's time for a new air filter on my '99. My typical philosophy on this truck is to wait until the original part wears out, then replace it (and upgrade if possible/necessary).

So before I buy a Mopar air filter, can anybody say that there is a better alternative?

I see the K&N filters mentioned a lot, but is there proof that they are better? Anybody have hard facts?

Is there another alternative I should be investigating?

ray, don't take this as a flame... ... . air filters have been discussed in many different threads here on the forums. there are folks who swear by K 'n N, and folks who swear at 'em. i have a nearly new one sitting in the shed. i decided not to run one on the CTD. i have run them in my vehicles for years, and like them. i have one in the scoot now, and won't take it out. i'm running the BHAF, and like it. K 'n N's almost assuredly flow better. some of us question whether they filter enough, and some say the turbo sucks the oil out of them and sends it through the turbo and intercooler. i dunno the answer. from the trend here on the TDR, i'm not sure ANYBODY KNOWS the answers. use what you feel comfortable with. putting in a new Fleetguard or NAPA gold in the box will work.

You might look at the AFE filters as well I heard they flow more air then the K&N's no facts though, sorry.

I think a freer flowing airfilter than the stock one is better hands down, but K&N isn't the only kind availible. I have K&Ns on both my rigs and they perform great, I'm keeping them. If I had to do it over again though I'd probably go with a BHAF, cheaper and no cleaning/oiling hassle.

I have the AFE MegaCannon which has been on the market for about a month or so. It is very obvious that it flows much more air and is less restrictive than any other filter I have had on my truck; and I've had a few.



Lets see... . I started with factory(of course), then to fleetgaurd, K&N RE-0880, BHAF, and now the AFE.



One drawback to the AFE, it takes my truck longer to warm up in the morning... lots of cold air being sucked in by the filter. Definately not a probelm though... I love this setup !!



Spool up seems to be noticeably quicker...



Give Andy or Doug a call at ADT they have a real good deal going on right now...

Well "MegaCannon" is an appropriate name for that thing. Thanks for adding the link. That thing is huge.

I took a look at your very bombed-out signature (PatriotDiesel), and now you've got me thinking...

My motor is still mostly stock, but as I slowly upgrade other engine pieces, what should I plan for now. You've got me thinking "forward compatibility", and I was not thinking that before.

amsoilman those pictures look like they could of been taken of my truck. Been using the filter since 95 and no problems.

What would you suggest, the stock filter? It only stands to reason that a filter with more surface area is going to flow better than a smaller one.

Flow more don't mean NOT filter better either.

Besides, I want Flow-more and my K&N filters great. Thats it!

Which facts (opinions) are more applicable, Ours or Cummins ?



From the Cummins Engine Web site:



Does DaimlerChrysler authorized the use of high-flow aftermarket air filters such as K&N with my Cummins engine?



No. DaimlerChrysler and Cummins do not recommend the use of increased flow air filters such as K&N, because they can allow contaminants into the intake that can ruin an engine (scoring the sides of the pistons, etc. )

Only made it as far as showing the wife. All she had to say was

Other things DC and Cummins don't recommend. Changing timing for better fuel economy and power. Tires larger than stock to fill up those huge wheel wells. Extended oil changes with synthetic oil. Any power enhancement. Any part that doesn't cost twice as much and doesn't say Mopar on it.



I personally only use dealer supplied parts, I feel that since they cost twice to five times more than other sources that they are at least that many times better.



You guys fix your KDPs yet?
