K&N filters worth the investment

Does any one have any information on the K&N filters. I would like to know if they improve fuel mileage.

Yes they are worth the money. some will say they arent but i like mine. Make sure you use pleanty of sealant grease. If you drive in real dusty off road conditions I might think twice about using one, unless you add an oiled prefilter to it.

Don't waste your time with the air filter it's not going to help a thing IMO. It might even cause problems I threw mine away I lost a turbo in 35 k miles not sure if the K&N was the only cause but dirt was the culprit.

John, Like SDalton says... there are arguments both ways. Some people say yes they work, some say no they don't. Personally I do run a K & N filter and I like it. I have noticed that my turbo does spool up quicker with a K & N over the stock filter. Though I do have to suggest one thing. Dump the stock airbox and go with the RE-0880 filter and the 25-0880 prefilter.

I had the square traditional type of K & N in my stock airbox... yeah it worked good... but once I went with the RE-0880... I'll never to back. The RE-0880 will be about the same price as the square type. I got mine at summitracing.com and paid $50 for the RE-0880 and 22 for the 25-0880 prefilter. Either way, no I haven't noticed any change in mileage.

K_Arts/anyone who uses the pre-filter with the K&N 0880, can this pre-filter be used with a Psychotty style system? I'm thinking of going with either the Psychotty or Ted Jannetty's version of the Psychotty system, and I have seen pictures on web pages that have a cover over the 0880 filter, and since this is the first time I've heard of a pre-filter and have no idea what it looks like, I was wondering if it can be used with the filter cover in a Psychotty type system.

Although at Brandon's in Modesto a couple weekends ago, I noticed that HVAC and others with a Psychotty type system didn't have covers over the 0880 filter that day, so maybe that cover isn't really necessary either???

This is a hot topic, much like Synthetics vs Petroleum, with personal bias' entering into the mix.

The bottom line on this is, without bringing brand names into the discussion, oiled foam will out perform any other media for stopping dirt. And at the same time it will flow air ALMOST as good as oiled gauze. If you are a hardcore bomber, and don't run off road in very dusty conditions, you stand to do better with the oiled gauze. If you want to flow nearly as much air as the oiled gauze and want to stop dirt the most effectively, then use Oiled foam. Some paper filters are actually more effective at stopping dirt than oiled gauze, but is very restrictive in comparison.

I have used all the above in many different situations, from the family car, to performance cars and bikes to off-road racing vehicles, my road race bikes run w/o filters.

I agree with those here that say to grease the sealing edge on the filter, regardless which type you use.

John, as far as increasing mileage, I doubt it. I would guess the turbo would likely spool up faster, particularly if you freed up the exhaust as well, i. e. straight piping it.

Hey K_Arts what type of pre filter is the 25-0880. I got a part # for the RE-0880 pre filter of 22-8035. I was thinking of going to this style of pre filter it was the only way to keep the dirt out with my sprint car while running the K&N.

It comes down to trade-offs. Better air flow in itself will enhance power and economy. This being the case running no filter at all will give you the least restriction and the greatest performance increase. But the expense side of this equation is not acceptable since the engine will not fair well with the added dirt and contaminants. So, add a K&N, get better flow and performance, but with more particulate matter entering the engine? Personally, I stick to the fleetguard until evidence shows the real filtering capabilities of the K&N vs. the Fleetguard. Also, I know the Fleetguard is not injecting oil into my airsteam which could potentially deposit oil on the intercooler.

Tom - To answer your question about prefilter working with the Psychotty system. To be honest with you I have no clue, I have never seen the Psychotty system in person... though I don't know why it wouldn't work. The prefilter just slides over the air filter.

BPine - The prefilter number that I gave 25-0880, was not only given to me by Summit Racing but also on K & N's website. K & N's website address is below. . check out under Conical shape. The following is listed:

The difference between the on you got and the on that I got is that mine is the Airforce Pre-cleaner and yours is the Pre-Charger Filter Wrap. Details are on the website below.

The prefilter for the K&N RE0880 will not fit the Physcotty housing. There is less than 1/2 inch of space between the air filter and the housing. FYI, I truly believe the Physcotty DOES lower EGTs significantly.

1. The prefilter will not fit. There is just enough room for the air to flow along the filter. I would think it would be hard to push the filter in with the prefilter on, if not almost impossiabe to get it in right.
2. The pscotty will lower EGT's by bringing in quite a bit of cold air. It is lower by 100F or so than just the scotty setup, and even cooler than the stock setup.
3. I do not think the pscotty system should be used on very high HP trucks, because the housing on the pscotty setup doesnt flow as much air as the scotty setup. I know that scotty is cooler on a 500hp+ truck than the pscotty setup. This is due to the fact that the engine is needing alot of air, the volume of air that enters the scotty over the pscotty is able to cool more than the differance in temperature.
I am currently using the pscotty air system, and have a slightly bombed 96 ram.

I found no diff useing k&n in my truck. I didn't like the loose fit of the k&n. When I traded my 99 in I gave them my k&n and kept the new Mopar filter I got to replace the k&n. I like the k&n in my HD. It seemed to make a diff, esp with the other intake mods you do with the HD air cleaner mod system. The stock air filter fits well, gives good perf and lasts along time. I felt no gains with k&n in truck, just louder. My wallet was a little lighter as well. There seemed to be a r esidue on turbo veins also after useing k&n. The best air filtering system is oil bath. I have seen no lititure or info on oil bath for our trucks. We all seem to want long life on our engines. I think a pre luber would give us the biggest bang for the buck since most wear occurs on start up. IMHO.

Walter,I was wondering when someone would mention an oil bath filter. I'm with you, they are the best,as long as you change the oil and don't go driveing on any crazy steep hills. A long time Cummins mechanic also told me they are the best,replaceable air filters are just more convenient. I think that one big enough for our Cummins engines would be too big to fit under the hood,it would have to be mounted outside,just like they do it on the big rigs.

After posting my question on 12/15/00,I decided to go with the stock box K+N. I also decided to modify the box. I was after lower EGT's,More MPG's, and performance lastly. I drilled 2, 1 1/2" holes on the front and rear of the box,directly below where the filter sits. I then mounted 2, 90 deg. elbows in the holes I drilled. Off the front one I ran a couple joined sections of radiator hose,around the battery,out front,directly behind the right headlight area. That will be sucking cool air into the box. Actually you can put your hand over the hose and you can feel the air being sucked in,when the engine is running. The elbow on the back of the box,I turned directly downward to prevent water entry. After doing this today and driving the truck it has more power. As far as lower EGT's, we'll find out when we get to Key West next month with the camper and trailer on.

I have used K&N's for years on my ATV's for one reason, maximum airflow. Every quad shop and engine builder I have ever dealt with over the years have all said the same thing, use the K&N for sand riding but use a foam filter for trails to stop dirt and dust.
Its a known fact in the quad and dirtbike scene that K&N's are NOT the most effective small partical dirt stoppers. I run them because my engines are built, I ride in the sand where its mostly dust free and piston life is not real important since my motor gets freshened up every 2 years regardless.
Do I run on on my truck, no, but I did on my 98 before I sold it. Stock is fine for me this go around, it works fine and its proven to stop dirt.
