Well I will finally have to admit the K & N air filter does let dirt through. If you want proof for yourself open the air box and take a clean piece of toilet paper and run along the inside.

You can't hardly see it with the naked eye, but when you run the toilet paper:eek:

P. S. This filter has never been cleaned and has about 15000 miles on it.

Chances are it has more to do with the seal, not the filter itself. The stock airbox is flimsy and I am sure it prolly flexes from time to time.

When I ran the RE 0880 it worked great... ... ... now I am using a custom built airbox with my hood that is much stronger then the stock airbox.

Yep.

Editing to clarify slightly, on a stock truck it prolly won't be an issue (flimsy airbox), its on the modified trucks that demand air that I was talking about.

The factory filter may not leak like the K & N does because it has more restriction thus the seal is sucked down tighter. I have had no problem with a K & N IF I grased the seal good. K & N is very specific on the grease and install. They would not go to this effort if they did not need to. I have used the K & N in other cars and it did not have the extensive install directions that it does with the Cummins

Don' t use toilet paper, it has too much ariable fiber "debris". Hold some up to the sunlight and wiggle it around if you don't believe me. You can see the fibers float off. Use a piece of clean white cloth instead to test for dust. I did it on my K&N equipped truck, after 50,000 + miles, and found NO dust, dirt or oil. Mine was greased real good. I cleaned it, per instructions, oiled it per instructions, re-installed it with grease. Ran it 100 miles and tested the airbox again and found NO oil. I trust mine.

Don,

As per your preaching, I called Cummins and they said K&N was a no-no. It will and has overdusted engines.

I knew nothing about air filters, so I called them.

How did you make your choice when you decided on an air filter?

You and Rrausch are so scared about other things being A-OK with a stamp of approval to be able to use them, yet you slap Cummins right in the face when they tell you not to use these air filters!!!

Does K&N pass any air filter tests that Cummins use?

Let me guess- you use them because THEY WORK FOR YOU.

Well son of a gun!

We agree on something!

I also use various other prodcuts and methods that WORK FOR ME.

Gene

For the record I now run AFE filter in the "custom stock" airbox. Before that I had RE 0880 K&N (worked great). Only reason I went with AFE was because thats what ADT sells.

K&N filters are made more consistant than some oil brands.

I know that the K&N filter I am using will trap more dust in my engine than I need to worry about no matter how many times I buy the same K&N. If I get myself a bottle of some oils Im never assured the oil is the same from bottle to bottle becausethey will not submit it for testing. I may get a bottle that just went through a tweak and no engie testing data was done to see if the tweak was indeed for the better.

More than just me or RRausch are concerned about using an oil that is approved for our vehicles. Many have had the wool pulled over their eyes and are learning there is more to oil than just sales hype.

I seriously doubt you called Cummins to inquire about what air filters you should use if you dont like what they have to say in regards to what oil and filters you should use.

Gene, we agree on more than you know.

Don~

K&N good to go

I love my K&N.

I check my post filter/pre after cooler hose each oil change I have yet to find any oil or dirt or anything on my intake system.

All I can say is if you don't like it don't buy it.

It works for me

See Ya

Chris

NO! NO! NO! Say it ain't so!

Please don't turn another subject/thread into an "OIL BASH FEST!"

I quit reading any thread with the word "OIL" in it, now I gotta add "K&N" to the black list.

Why don't you guys exchange phone numbers so the rest of us can have our forum back?

They can kiss my behind.

An undamaged K&N that's properly oiled is magnitudes better than paper.

If you can get dirt to float out of a K&N, you're running it dry. If you get dirt past it, either you're flowing so much air you've torn it apart (I've seen paper ripped apart, don't get excited), or else damaged it by doing what they tell you not to do.

I've run K&N's in the desert before. It was a Mitsubishi diesel pickup, and the K&N did NOT let dirt through, but the paper would. Could prove it by running the paper and you could see the dirt collect on the inside of the housing.

Now Bill,

That is once for Don, and once for you bringing oil into an air filter discussion.

You two have one track minds!:D

But since you brought it up, that link says MEETS or EXCEEDS.

Oo.
