I'm tosing that junk K&N air filter, I have had the second boost sensor go bad and it has the same goopy black soot on it and its the oil from that pos filter.

I called K&N and tried to get them to do something like refund my money and they told me they don't recommend using their filters in turbo charged diesels. If they don't recommend it why do they sell it:confused:

And for those of you that think I might be over oiling it I don't even oil the intake side of the filter. The damb thing is sucking the oil threw the filter and its getting into the cold air charging system and fu*!in things up.

This pisses me off because I love the one in my atv and the one on my scag mower, and have not noticed any dirt passing threw the one on my truck but these 50 boost sensors are getting expensive.

I will be going back to the fleetgaurd air filter and keeping it from now on.

Just got back an oil analysis from PdMA which showed silicon contaminants at 0 (zero). Turbo vanes are clean. I blame this totally on K&N. I have about 20,000 miles on this filter and have never touched it since installation.

BTW: Oil is 15w40 Rotella with 5500 miles of local driving, some on very dusty roads. We had no rain during this time.

I think the problem most people are having with the K&N is due to over-oiling.

More is better does not apply to this filter.

I've run them on my Ram, 2 Harleys, and my Wifey's Landcruiser for the last 5 years with no troubles.

I have run a K&N for 40,000 miles, I checked the Map and AIT sensors a few weeks ago. they were spottless. :D

I blame this on K&N too. :D

Poor seal??

The K&N on my 2001 had a poor outer foam seal. There was dirt tracks on the sides of the suction filter housing. I have noticed no performance change by switching back to the fleetgard filter. I have seen many dusted ag and industrial engines. Ane I will not take a chance with this fine cummins engine. It is incredable how little dust in the engine will ruin it. I do have K&Ns in both my Gold Wing and 4Runner. They seem to be working well in those applications IMHO

Have 54K on my K&N with no problems. Check it out each time I clean it, after reading some of the posts here. I think some people must use 409 or greese cutter on the thing to clean it or wash it out with hot water thinking it will remove the oil better. That only srinks the Cotton on the filter and makes it seperate. The other thing I think some people to is try and use a hair dryer to dry it quickly and reinstall it. You should have a spare paper filter when cleaning it. Instal the paper filter until the K&N dries properly so one may re-oil it. Have two other cummins with them in there, both 96's, no problems yet.

Just for grines I'll pull my Map Sensor and have a look this weekend.

My filter shows not signs of coming apart. It was real bad dirty tonight when I cleaned it. Had 7000 miles on it. Normally do it every 3k.

I must be an idiot

I must be stupid or something because my K&N is crap. I clean it about every 10,000 miles or so and only use cold water and the cleaner that k&n recomends(always buy one of the kits with the clean and oil in them) and let it air dry usually in front of a fan. I do not over oil it and I just put oil on the intake side of the filter. The thing still looks like new.

I'm not saying it doen't filter out the dirt it does a great job of this. I take the intake hose off the turbo every time I change the oil and the hose is clean and the fins have no oil on them. But the damb thing is junking out my map sensors and the ait sensor had the same gooy sooty gunk on it to.

I have two other K&Ns on two other toys and they work great, one is on my Scags lawn mower and sees more dust than anyone could imagine. It has worked great for 3 years.

I just don't think that the filter is good for my truck. If you others have good luck with it than great. I hope it continues to work for you and everyone else. I thought I would let everyone know so that if they were having the same problem they would know what might be causing it.

Next time I will keep my mouth shut and let everyone figure it out on their own.

If your standing on the driver's side of the truck and looking into the engine compartment it is on the right side of the fuel filter housing. It takes a 1 1/4" deep barrel socket to get it out. and you will have to look into the threaded end to see if it has the gooy gunk from the k&n on it.

Hope this helps

there was a thread some time back about IAT sensors and the culprit was something to do with manual transmissions and high shift points causeing valve over lap and soot showing up in the intake side of manifold (your signature does not say if your truck is manual or auto). Maybe your engine is causeing the sensors to go bad. It will be interesting to see if the sensors last longer after you take out the K&N, keep us posted.

Hold on their Mr. DarrellB,

Your comments are very welcome by yours truly and I for one don’t think you’re an idiot  . We're all here to help each other and sometimes it may look like we're ganging up but the fact is we all are very curious as to why your having this problem and the majority of us are not.

I had a light coat of oil on my turbo fins also when I over oiled after cleaning my K&N filter.

I blame this on my Wife, After all whats a Neanderthal to do take the blame, Nah.

I'm now running the BHAF NAPA 2790 but had no complaints with K&N either after 75,000 miles.

One thing that I have started to do after I have cleaned and re-oiled my filter is to let it stand on end for about 24 hours. If it is over oiled it will collect at the bottom of the filter and if bad enough it will “drain” out of the filter.

From what I have read in K&N instructions you guys are cleaning these filters way to often! What I read was that you can go like 100K in normal use before cleaning. Cleaned to ones on the boat once in 6 years. Never cleaned the one on my 1993 in 7 years 50K. A little dirt aids in filtering. Snow King
