I just wanted to find out if anyone has any REALLY in-detail (pictures) of the KDP fix including gear-housing removal and such? I am absolutely mechanically retarded, I was able to follow the instructions up to removing the gear housing, and then I read about putting it back on and people saying to make sure I seal it and... . WOW I got lost :{ :{ !! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Phil

If you get the kit from TST, it comes with really good directions, pictures and everything. I think it's only about $2o, and it comes with everything you need including a new seal and gasket maker.

The TST kit sells for 48$... just don't want to spend the money on the kit, I can make the tab myself and figure that's about all I will need plus tools...

Considering your mechanically retarded $48 is a good deal. it comes with great directions, the tab and the seals/sealants you need.

Your right, after looking at it again I noticed that the kit has full instructions and all the other stuff I will need for the job... Think I will pay for the kit. Thanks!!

TST Kit - A Good Idea IMHO

I bought my truck a month ago.

Got the KDP kit from TST a week later. Yeah, I waffled on the price too ... it's a measly little piece of metal and a bolt, fercryinoutloud.

But IMHO, if you're gonna pop the cover, it's foolish to re-use the crank seal.

The kit comes with everything you need.

I'm pretty decent/fearless at wrenching, but ZERO experience with diesels (this is my first). The TST Instructions were clear and thorough, installation was smooth and easy. I only found one small error, they forget to mention the wiring clip on the bottom of the radiator shroud... caused a bit of #@$%! .

Here they are, if you want to review them first:

I'd say get the TST Kit.

OR, enlist someone knowledgable to help you with the KDP Jig fix.

Joe G. (and others) can hook you up.

Jig Fix is cheaper, but requires a bit more mechanical 'mojo'.

Beer and/or pizza provide fine incentive for wrenchy buddies...

Either way, JUST KILL THAT SUCKER - SOON.

Mine was poking out about 2mm... not any more :)

Press On,

Hey Ted, thanks for the reply... sounds like you were very satisfied with your TST kit. I ordered one tonight mainly for the instructions. Plus the fact that it has pretty much everything you need for it... put the icing on the cake. I fly home in 19 days and get to see the truck for the first time Oo. Oo. (on a tour right now in the Marines) and plan on doing the KDP Fix before I even put the keys in the ignition!!

Yeah, good idea. I did mine at about 120k, and it was sticking out a couple mm's. Although, I had a buddy that did his at 240k and it wasn't out at all. Definitely not worth the risk though. Good luck.

Blew a head gasket on mine the other day. I thought that I would have the KDP fixed while it was apart. @ 240 K it was out and gone. I got lucky no damage. The mechanic that done mine just put loctite on the case bolts and retorqued. He left the KDP out and filled the hole with silicone. I think I would have rather had the pin back in place and tabbed? He had it back together before I knew what he had done. Do you all think that this will come back to haunt me? Has anyone just left the pin out? Mine is a 96 model 3500 stock work truck with a 4in exhaust. I have goodies to install, waiting to replace the clutch.

Ted,

I DO NOT recommend the jig fix!!

Sorry, Joe G.

I DO NOT recommend the jig fix!!

Joe G.

OOOPS.

I just re-read your sig... I somehow confused you with someone else who had "Jig Fix" contact info in their sig.

That's the trouble with staying up on the forums too late...

My bad. I am sorry, Joe G.

I do, however, stand behind the "beer and pizza" comment.

RE: the Jig Fix, I just don't like the potential risk of introducing metal chips to the engine innards... especially right above a geartrain!

Yeah, anyone who comes by my house with beer and pizza can get their KDP fixed. :D:D No problem. I even have a few tabs in my tool box that I made one day just for having something to do.
