I was looking for a kit for the KDP and saw summit had one. The kit says for 1994-2002. Will this kit not work on my first gen(91)?.

Thanks

All you need is a front seal and some RTV for the cover. Don't forget to remove, clean, and loctite the bolts by the cam. They are more of a problem than the KDP on our trucks. ;)

how big of a concern is the KDP with our trucks? i mean compaired to the 2nd gens

It's not as common as the 2nd gens, but there have been 1st gens that reported pins that have come out. Better to be safe and lock the pin in place somehow.

Franco, I have done what Jay and Pete are suggesting. Instead of a tab or set screw, you can just drive the Pin back into the hole and "mash" the edge of the hole after it's in. The bolts near the pin have a bad problem of loosening. All of mine had backed off some. One of them can't be removed, but you can back it out enough for some Loctite on the threads.

We did mine by removing the fan and radiator hose. Well, when I say we, I of course mean Greenleaf and Philip. I did supervise the deal for QA purposes and must admit they did a darned good job! :-laf

Hey all,

So what you guys are saying is just use a punch to push the pin back in and like mash / hit the edge of the hole so the pin can not move anymore. I guess I must look at the pin and hole to understand the instructions. Sounds easy enough!! Any pics would be nice before I inspect my KDP.

if you have a cummins dealer nearby id get a front crank seal and gear case gasket from them, but its not required.

Tim, it's kind of like a reverse "mushroom" on the edge of the hole. The edges cover it enough to keep the pin from backing out. Philip used a pneumatic chisel to do the hole on mine.

My buddy and I just did the KDP on my 92 and his 95 side by side. Kinda like getting 2 birds stoned at once, wait how does that go?

Anyway, I did not have any luck trying to mushroom the hole, it just broke off a couple small chunks of the timing case around the pin. I made a tap to fit on both, and it was easy enough. Both KDP's had moved a little but no more than 1/4 inch. I had one cam bolt loose and 2 of the 4 oil pump bolts were loose on the 92. All bolts were tight on the 95 but I pulled and lock-tited all the ones that were accessable. On the 92 I pulled the radiator (had to get it cleaned out) and on the 95 I didn't. I recommend pulling it just for the extra space to work, and to not worry about damaging the fins while swinging a hammer down in there.

Best is to use a small diameter round punch, say 3/16 or 1/4. Grind or file the end of the punch flat.

With about half of the punch on the case, and half over the hole whack the punch once ot twice to displace some material. Only a very little displacement is necessary... . no need to "mash" it. Repeat three times around the outside of the hole approximately evenly around the hole.

Again don't worry too much if you can't get the marks even... a Y pattern will also work.

The pin will never move again.

I spent lots of time on a manufacturing floor staking various different products and spent even more time designing and testing. For this reason I believe staking like described is better than using a tab... also easier and cheaper.

YMMV

I went through my summit catalogs and checked their website but could not find the kit. I wanted to put one on the wife's 01 when I put in a new radiator in a few weeks. Can someone post a link or part#.
