I just purchased a 1997 3500 from the original owner. He used it to tow his bass boat, and haul a camper a few times. The truck has been pampered with all the service done at the dealership. The owner had never heard of the killer dowel pin problem. The truck has 99,000 miles. My question is: do I need to have the KDP problem corrected or is it a case of if it hasn't happened yet, it's probably OK?

Any help would be appreciated.

Fix it. Don't hesitate. If it get's you, its expensive to fix. Right now, it's cheap and easy to remedy.

99K miles is nothing for these engines. Many KDP failures happen long after that kind of mileage. E-mail me at -- email address removed -- for instructions on how to do the job to prevent the failure.

KDP Question

Definitely do it. I bought my '98 last spring with 99,000 miles on it. Had never heard of the KDP problem. After much research on this and other forums I decided to tab it rather than pin it. Tabbing is more work but allows you to get at other bolts which need to be checked as well.

My pin hadn't moved at all but but with it tabbed I sleep better. Plus it gives you experience in working on the truck. If you follow the step by step instructions it's pretty simple. Hardest part is working over the high front end. Rig up something to stand on. My chest was sore the next day from leaning on top of the radiator but well worth it.
