i have a 1998. 5 24 valve one ton dulley. i tow a 35 foot toyhauler and am curious to what others have done to lower the engine coolant temp?I do not have a chip in it. I have done alot around that though. . ex. . transmission upgrade. . waste gate. but no chip. just curious. don't know if water methanol would help at all. any info would be great. i am thinking of taking the radiator out and getting it cleaned out. that should help. thanks for any help.

Cleaning the rad is a good idea. Maybe a 180deg. thermostat, and do you hear the clutch fan cut in when it gets hot (loud roar when it cuts in). Hows the trans. temp. it will add to the higher coolant temp. if its running hot. Hope this helps.

I agree with FourBarR about installing a 180 deg thermostat. I live in Arizona west of Phoenix and it does get HOT here in the summer. My truck had a stock 190 thermostat and my fan would kick on and off in the summer when travelling on I-10 which is relatively flat. I changed to a 180 degree thermostat and and it apparently opens up earlier to maintain < 190 and my fan rarely comes on. I bought a Cummins thermostat for about $25. I do think if you have not moved your crankcase vent from the front of the engine then your radiator is quite possibly pretty nasty from oil fumes and dust/dirt. Anyhow, good luck, keep us posted.

I have installed a flex-a-lite dual electric fan. it has an adjustable thermostate on it. i have it running cooler so it's on quite a bit. I will look into changing the thermostat to a 180. I defenitally will clean the radiator and air-air cooler. the transmission is brand new. i just had it rebuilt with bd and ats stuff. and i have the mag tech double deep pan with royal purple in it. i agree. the radiator could probably use a cleaning. thanks for all your input.

The Flex-a-lite fan is not rated to tow a heavy load such as your toyhauler as it doesn't move enough air across the radiator. The cooling fan is the stock set-up.

Yeah! That was new info he through on us last minute there!! Flex-a-Lite fan is only rated at 18K GCWR. IMO... . that is even a stretch!!

Damn. That sucks to hear. live and learn i guess. I bought a 180 degree thermostat today. gonna see how it does this weekend. Im gonna clean the radiator out the following weekend. Im sure with 140,000 it could use it. thanks for all your input everyone.

The oil breather bottle is oiling up the radiator on the drivers side.

It will be best to remove it-radiator--and clean it.

Then remove the blow by bottle and throw it away. Put a 6 foot lenght of 3/4 heater hose on it and take it up over the motor and out the back.

If you use the 3/4" heater house is great but remember to have it slop down hill all the way and no low spots. The tube can build up condensation and if it freezes during the winter back pressure will build up and that is not a good thing.
