The chickens eat pretty good in my neighborhood. I see the feed trucks going out everyday from the feed mill. I see the truck and train loads of corn coming in everyday from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, etc. to the feedmills.
You can turn around a chicken quite fast when you feed it a lot of ground corn, soy meal, and protein supplement. The lights are kept on all the time so the chickens don't roost. They just keep eating and growing. Steroids are not used.
Genetics are used to produce a certain breed that displays predictable characteristics. A consistent predictable growth pattern and uniform size make processing the birds more efficient. The processing plant is designed for specific sized birds. If the plant processing becomes interrupted and the growers have to keep the chickens for an extra period, the processing plants have difficulty with the heavier birds.
Genetics are used to produce all white chicks too. In a 50,000 bird chicken house, the white chickens will peck all the black and multicolored chickens to death! The non-white chicks are destroyed at the hatchery.
The feeding process is monitored and each farmer as well as the feed mill manager knows exactly when the truck should arrive to keep the chickens from ever running out of feed.
Growing and processing chickens is a science that is overseen by a considerable number of PHDs!
I suppose Southwestern Bell Telephone changed their name to SBC so they could remove the stigma associated with Southwestern!!
