I know it's been discussed to death, just looking for a little more input before I pull the trigger on a purchase. The obvious answer seems to be to put a cat back in the truck but this is kind of pricey. What I was looking at was a direct replacement cat on Rockauto and it was about $380. Also think I remember seeing a post about a different muffler from MBRP that might also kill it with out the cat but haven't been able to locate it and haven't had time to call MBRP. Want to get something done before it's time to hook up the the camper. Would like to hear some things that have positively worked before I start shelling out the dollars but if it takes a cat back on it to kill the drone then it will be money well spent! While I do like the tone of the MBRP if the final outcome quiets it down then so be it! Just want to arrive at our destination without the feeling that that one nerve in the back of your head has been rubbed the wrong way all day after a day on the road. To many other things out there that do that! Also note that I am not planning any big power increases so flow is not a concern for me either from what I've read about the cat.

I know this is a different direction but after I installed a Fluidamper the drone was gone. It also makes a huge difference in clutch engagement and shifting. I would however get the stock dampener for the 6. 7 instead, along with the fan pulley.

Dampener for 800 lb ft 6. 7 Cummins #5285679
Fan Pulley Cummins #4930580

I installed a turbo back Silverline exhaust system and the drone was unbelievable, bad enough for me to want to return the purchase. Instead I was mailed a 2nd "muffler" to put in front of the 1st ... . same result. Finally ended up installing a Donaldson (52" I think) and it reduced the drone to manageable levels. Do a search on Donaldson and you will find a lot of info on drone reduction.

Prarie Dog,

I was the one who was having problems with the standard 4" cat back system and droning while towing. I called MBRP and bought their new diesel no drone muffler and installed that one in the standard position and installed the regular muffler just before it. I still have drone while towing at ~2100-2400. It is considerably less than what it was but still noticable.

I posted a pic of the new muffler on page 3 of this thread.

I am not sure I would spend the money on this system. I have heard nothing but good things with the Donaldson mufflers and too much about drone with the MBRP.

I have a 40" Donaldson and mega-cab resonator with the Kitty installed in my attic, zero drone when towing.

This may sound silly, but do you guys who have droning, have big exhuast tips? I have the stock exhaust except for a Rokk Teck Silent Might muffler. I had no drone at all until I got a 6" tip for Father's Day a few years ago. It looks great, but now I have the drone at certain rpm and loads.

I still have stock exhaust and was planning to install a 4" resonator such as the FTE unit in place of my stock muffler. I don't tow very often and I want more sound, but don't want to spend the coin on a full exhaust and don't want to noise of a straight pipe. I've heard a few trucks with stock exhaust and aftermarket mufflers and they are louder, but don't have the bark I'm looking for. I know it won't ever be the same, but if I could get somewhere close to how my '01 sounded... it had stock exhaust with resonator cut out and Magnaflow muffler in place of the stock one with a 5" tip.

Paul Fox @ OrangeMuffler.com - Welcome To Our Website! spliced in a direct replacement Shuttleworth HD diesel muffler in mine when new. Mine is much lower restriction but not a straight through design. Zero drone to this day,but it does have a throatier sound.

When dissected you can see how many turns the stock exhaust has.

I had to put my resonator back on to get rid of my drone... it's straight thru so it didn't affect anything else...

Four years ago I install the SpinTech muffler otherwise all stock and like Regcabguy, no drone and throatier sound.
