Kurt, just got back from delivering a 38 ft. 5er to Mobile, Al. from York, Ne. Was grossing 22,980 lbs. I didn't get in any mountains, but there's some pretty good grades from K. C to St. Louis, and down I-55 to Lafayette, La. I pulled it all the way with the Comp. on #5!! I never thought I'd see the day I could pull in #5. On one long grade I saw it touch 1300*, and that was because I was doing 70 at the bottom and hit 75 at the top, the rest of the time I just feathered the pedal to keep it at 70, and egt's would be 1100* to 1250*, depending on the grade. Man, I'm tickled to death with it!! Can't wait to get it dynoed to see what hp gains are. I've got the boost set so it won't get over 42#, I hope that will be ok. I got out once to check if the pyro sensor tube had blown out. That happened on the way home from the install, I was jazzing around with it and all of a sudden my egt's went down to 300*, and just stayed there, we forgot to tighten the nut on the sensor, and it blew out, and was just hanging there.

Anyway I'm one happy trucker!!! Let me know if the 42# boost is alright. L8er,

Larry

Yogi, I would like you to try 38 psi if you can and see if there is any (EGT's) temp difference. If you have the Time. I have been running the last one on my truck with a 12cm2 and the power feels the same at 38 or 42. I will test on mine to see the difference in the intake charge rise. I sure would like to get on a Dyno too get some more exact testing in... Thanks Kurt.

KWIKKURT,

I currently have an HX40-16 turbo. Do you offer a 12cm2 turbine housing upgrade for this turbo? Is 12cm2 the smallest housing you can fit on the HX40?

I'm pondering the twin turbo thing, too. Do you offer a hybrid turbo in the range of HX55 and 16-18 cm2 housings? What I was thinking was to use an HX40-12cm2 and H2E-17cm2 together (or a similar combination). Please let me know what you offer. Thanks.

Michael

Diesel Puff, The 12cm2 is the smallest I would suggest trying on the hx40. It spools almost instantly!!! It is the smallest that I offer also.

As for larger Turbo / Higher Hp / and Super LOW Towing Egt's I have a Turbo I am calling the B-1 Bomber. It is in R&D right now and shows great promise. I will have results on the latest setup in a few days. Psi range will be up to 55 - 60psi! and it will bolt right in with only a mod to the 4in vband clamp ehxaust like a 16cm2 Hx40 housing.

Tease!

:D

Keep me upto date on it. I'm at my girlfriends for the next 4 days, I'll try to email ya when i get back to my home PC.

Kirt what is the discharge temp at 55/60psi on that turbo? Ther is no single charger that has a map that high to my knowledge. Just because it holds together there doesn't make it right. When people first started putting the h2e on pulling trucks they were hanging together at up to 67psi... ... for a while. Just my thoughts so be careful. You are one person that should know that just cause the boost says a high # doesn't mean its good for the motor(high heat carries less oxygen)

Adam, I have not pushed it past 42 psi YET! :D I have just installed a new XXXXX Housing on it to get it higher in the map at the Low power of my truck;) I know from the readings at 42 psi Especially on the Turbine Drive pressure side that there is alot of room to grow. It has bigger wheels than the Hx40 by guite a bit. In other applications that a setup similar to this has been used on they are running 60psi. On one CTD powered truck he has been running it for almost a year and half. (He had a Early Model kwikspool before that). I plan on using my towing Egt's to set the max boost. Probably at 50 to 55. Even on the Hx40 as you know there is a little power gain above 38 to 40 but it is not worth the extra stress on the turbo. Thanks for your input. I consider you one of the Pioneers of Turbo R&D (Reck & Destroy) :D

Kurt, just got back from del. of a 40' , was grossing 25,500#. Still no egt problems. I tried adjusting boost down w/the set screw in the elbow. When I backed it down to 38# max, the egt's raised about 100*. The steel set screw in the brass elbow is so loose now it vibrates out on me and the temps go higher, so I have to tighten it to make it stay, so have to feather the pedal to keep it at 40# or less. Would it be ok to wrap the set screw with teflon tape to keep it in place?

BTW, I will take one of the socket/allen wrenches (17mm). I hope to get down your way soon, so will pick it up. Want me to send a check?

Larry.

Yogibear, try some blue loctite on that set screw to hold it there. Don't do it while the turbo is hot. Red loctite(semi-permanent) might hold better, but it might also be harder to turn the set screw later on.

Not many people know this, but heat can loosen up loctite, when you have bolts coated with the green loctite(permanent) and HAVE to get them out, like I do, at work, a propane torch will melt it enough to get it loose.

Still, I think that part of the turbo will not see excessive heat, and the loctite should hold.

Thanks Briar, but I was wanting to be able to adjust it. I didn't know if the teflon tape would melt and give me problems or not. I thought of knurling the threads, but I'm afraid that won't work because of the brass elbow. Any other ideas out there? TIA.

Larry

well Kurt it sounds like the B1 turbo will be a just like the h2 hybrid I'm running now. The compressure has the highest p/r holset makes at 48psi and I'm sure its safe to run over that a bit. How far I really don't know.

Great Job doing this work. I'm glad you found a great hobby.

Boy can you fall behind when you are not online for a day!! :)

Yogi, The locktite idea should work fine. (Thx Briar) Even with red loctite - brass seems to slip alittle and will alow you to move ths screw when needed.

Or removing and peening will fix it for sure. (thx Steve).

Adam, I will install my latest version of the B-1 tomorrow and begin Egt and Charge Air Temp testing. I am anxious to see how it performs.

All I can say is it is a very durable built turbo. It is the best componets from atleast three different turbos. Big shaft, Big wheels, Cool Wastegate setup = Great combination!!!!! Everthing else is Classified. I want to sell a few before someone else comes up with the same idea!

Yogi, Kurt is right (when is he not? :D ) either the blue or red loctite will still allow you to move the set screw when needed. It'll be especially easy to do, when the turbo is warm. Yet, it should keep the screw from vibrating loose on it's own. Great stuff, it reduces the amount of "call backs" I get at work...

Now, back to the turbo discussion! My Kwikspool housing is fantastic! Keep 'em coming... .
