As the temperature rises in the southern California desert, the dunes trips must come to an end until it begins to cool off again. With a local off road club our typical trip has always been to Glamis, CA so out of the blue, and having just been to Glamis over Easter, we decided to try out the “Southern Dunes” which mostly consists of areas called Buttercup and Gordon’s Well where we had never been. With a smaller group going we tried for a quick and inexpensive trip. Staying in a local Yuma hotel instead of bringing the toy haulers and tents helped beat the late season heat and really panned out nicely. We pretty much just duned it most of the morning and into the afternoon on Saturday, then some locals we met at the dunes were kind enough to have us out to a great spot on the Colorado river to cool down and rinse off.

All the rigs did well, with no breakage other than a new knock in my CTD which I’m attempting to diagnose currently. Check out this link to join in the fun with that!

I’ll try and post some pics. from the trip for fun as I get them transferred onto my computer.

Looks like a load of fun. Do you guys get college credits for it too? We'll have to meet up some time. Keep us posted with your next trip.

Hey guy,

want to have some dune fun in the summer but not too hot?

Near St. George, UT is a place called Sand Hollow. Elevation is like 2500 ft and hot summertime temps get to like 100-110 max.

Go I-15 north to UT. Exit I think it's either 13 or 16... for Huricane (pronounced hur-a-kin)..... go though the convenience area, down a hill, at around 2 miles, look for a small sign on right for turn to sand hollow... .

turn right and folow road til you see a new road going uphill to the left. follow that for a short bit to the park.

there is an entrance fee but it still has primitive camping for the ATV areas... ... there is a full hookup campground but ATV's are not allowed in there.....

The sand there is like coral pink sandunes but not as mushy... ... the color is from the redrock sandstone... ... ...

A neat feature of this place is hidden away... ... from the campspot, straight back about 2 miles on trails, is a hill called sand mountain... . this hill is pretty steep and about 700 ft high!!

So come to utah and have some fun!!

See my quad pics in my readers rigs to see some of the sand dunes.

Lorenz, It'd be great to meet up sometime, I'm glad to hear of your interest. The next dunes trip to Glamis will be Halloween, which is the soonest it cools down out there. It's always a great trip with everyone stoked for the new season. If you're interested in meeting up then or anytime we will definitely be in touch. We don't get college credit, but our club is officially recognized by the University of Arizona and on occasion we can get funding for events, trips and so on.

Eric, I appreciate your info, we're always looking for new places to go, dunes, rocks, or just whatever. I definitely plan to look into Sand Hollow, it sounds really nice. We also are wanting to plan a trip to Pismo beach this summer sometime before it is closed forever :{ . I've never been there but my club has and reports that it's like nothing else. Any one have information on this area that could be helpful towards a trip? It's appreciated.

Pismo Trip

June 9-11th

Page 3-4 is were you can find the reservation info. Open invite to all, Just give me a heads up on the # of pple so I can bring enough food.

Jake and I will be pulling in sometime Friday mid day so you get to try and find us... . we'll be set up already kickin it. Hopefully we can set up enough tents an ez-ups to have plenty of room to breath. Pismo can get pretty tight for camping space. Not like Glamis at all.

All these places are in the upper elevation to some extent... . Sand Hollow and Coral pink are the most southern and hotter... . and Little sahara is by Nephi, UT... . most are around 2500-4000 ft and right now the temps are around 90-95 so perfect weather here... St. George will get to like 110 at the most and I think Sand Hollow about the same. Little Sahara might get to 100 at the hottest.
