As I mentioned in my thread about this.....sometimes when it starts to slow down (with cruise engaged, on a grade) I can give the throttle a quick blip and the boost goes up as it should and doesn't downshift then it maintains speed. However, this could be because the TC momentarily unlocks and signals some other parameter to adjust boost....so it may be relevant, and it may not be.

Well today in our 5th day on the road I got the lazy cruise again. Checked was at 5400+ alt. Stopped for lunch it when we got back on the road it was doing it a lot. Had to increase speed from 60 to 63 this time to stop it. SnoKing

Whatever is causing this is sure annoying. Parleys ,and Daniels canyon is a route out of Salt Lake to a lake I fish. Both are quite a long grade. running empty ,and set for the speed limit,it loses about 5 mph , shifts to 5th, shifts back up to 6th, and keeps doing this all the way to the top. If I take it out cruise, and use the throttle to maintain the speed it does not shift down.

My previous truck in cruise would pull these canyons without ever shifting down. This is certainly not a power problem, has to be something to do with how the cruise is set up.

This lazy cruise/boost really drove me crazy on this trip. We cross back forth across the continental divide a 7300 feet several times. I wish there was a way online to pursue this issue vs visiting a dealer that can not replicate the issue at 1500' here in Phoenix.

OK, I sent an email to Customer Service. Any bets they tell me to take it to a dealer?

Here is was I sent. Snoking

I am experiencing a problem with our truck that only occurs while at higher elevations of over 5000 or 6000 feet. The truck while running along at 60 MPH will come to a hill and the speed will drop off 4 or 5 miles per hour before it finally shifts down a gear and comes back up to set speed. If you watch the boost while this is occurring, it is stuck at around 10 PSI. This will repeat this cycle again and again. If I speed up to 63 MPH I do not have the issue. However I prefer to tow at 60MPH.

We are towing a 5th wheel trailer, however a Turbo Diesel Registry forum poster in Salt Lake City has this same issue when not towing, so I do not believe that towing is causing this. Others also are seeing the same issue. The truck has all of the latest TSB and Recalls applied.

This occurred both before and after all these TSB’s and recalls.

We are in Phoenix area for the winter so a dealer here will not be able to replicate the issue as we are at around 1200-1500 elevation.
Therefore I am bringing this issue directly to you and hopefully you can pass this on to your engineers. I would be glad to talk to engineering directly if they would like to call me.

Well, I told you a couple post back that they would tell me the standard line to take it to my dealer:

Dear xxxx,

Thank you for contacting the RAM Customer Assistance Center.

I can understand the aggravation that your vehicle issues are causing.
I appreciate you taking the time to bring them to my attention.

xxxx, I recommend contacting your dealership to arrange an
appointment for proper diagnosis and repair.

Our dealerships have the factory training to determine the cause of the
shifting while towing.

I will also be documenting this on file for future reference.

Thank you again for your email. Should you require additional
assistance, or have any new information to provide, please reply to this
email message or call 1-866-RAM-INFO (1-866-726-4636).

Sincerely,

The question is, is the cruise control lazy or the boost lazy or both. No "blue screen" on the 8.4 display! SnoKing

Thats a good question, I have always thought its just the cruise control calibration . I do know its annoying. If I am towing, and starting to pull a pretty good grade naturally it does loose MPH ,and then shifts down to fifth gets back to the speed set , but it holds fifth ,and the speed set until I have topped the hill then shifts back to six. It doesn't hunt gears when towing, and pulling a grade, it shifts down ,and holds the speed. If its just a slight grade it does do the gear hunting, and loosing about 5 mph shifts down gets back to speed ,and then shifts back to 6 , and then repeats itself

It seems to hold the speed in cruise in fifth if I lock out six when climbing a grade . I'll have to pay more attention with that to see if its doing the same. I just do it so it quits hunting gears, not paying a lot of attention to see if its loosing speed ,and then catching back up, naturally its not shifting gears. This is when not towing.

While I can't say for sure, I think cruise may not be the issue.....it's just the most repeatable and unbiased way to tell.....when I use my foot, it's hard to say if it is doing it or not because I sink my foot further into the throttle if I am slowing down. It's makes it a bit subjective.

I've had mine in 2, maybe 3 times, no resolution.

I think what we are facing is similar to the dead pedal issue, its the nature of the beast. I don't think you are going to get a resolution unless there is some kind of cruise calibration or sensitivity , and if you have had in in there 3 times, apparently there is no flash or adjustment.

Easy solution for me is to lock it out of six on the grades running empty, and it usually holds fifth once it shifts down towing, and does not keep hunting gears, if not I lock into fifth towing. A lot less annoying
