My wife and I were hauling our horse trailer home and heard a significant rattling noise. Thankfully we weren't far from home so I checked underneath the truck when we got home and there was a small leak on the torque converter access cover. I checked the transmission fluid level, which was low and saw some smoke or fumes coming out of the dipstick tube. The leak slowed and when I added 1 quart of ATF4 the leak began to drip again. The fluid is orangish in color and is all over the underside of the truck. Any ideas? Thank you.

If it is leaking ATF the seal on the torque converter is gone for some reason. The rattle could be the reason or a symptom. Until it is pulled apart you won't know for sure.

I just got off the phone with the repair shop and they are recommending a full transmission rebuild and a new torque converter cooler, plus shop time the quote is $6900.

Ouch!!!! That is way high for even a race unit with a billet parts. Where are you and who did you contact?

I live on the gulf coast and the shop is in west Pensacola, FL. I was quoted less than half of that price over the phone from another, more experienced repair shop so I had the vehicle moved there. I was also able to find a 48RE out of a wrecked 2007 rwd 3500 with 30,000 documented miles from an auto salvage place for $1,000.

Sometimes when a vehicle is on the flatbed and is rolling into the mechanics parking lot it's "paging Mr. Otis" (elevator company)

I paid around $5500 for a billet triple disc convertor and shafts, Gorend parts 48RE overhaul for 600-700 rwhp. 7K is way to overpriced.
