Hello,

I have a oil leak coming from the front seal aroung the crankshaft.

Second, how much trouble is this to fix? Do i have remove the radiator or not?

I have let this go for too long!

Thanks for all your help! I am quickly becoming hooked on TDR!

Tom,

It's not too bad a job. While you have the front gear case cover off you might as well block the KDP. E-mail me at -- email address removed -- for the info about how to do that.

No you do not have to remove the radiator. Just remove the fan, belt, & fan shroud>(don't have to but it makes it easier to fix the KDP in the longrun my $. 02). The fan pully as well as the damper

also have to be removed to get the cover off. (The damper is not a press fit & is easily removed. )

If you havent fixed your KDP (dont know your year model & not shure if you need to) you should while you have the cover off.

THIS IS NOT MY $. 02 AND SHOULD BE DONE ASAP!!!!!!

You should be able to do it in 4 hours, including tabbing the KDP, if you make your tab ahead of time. I used an old Sawzall blade that was about an inch wide to make mine. One of the hardest things about the whole job is getting the new seal seated in the cover. Make sure you clean the crank real good, you should have no oil on it. Use the plastic sleeve that is supplied with the Cummins kit to get the seal over the crank. The black ring that comes with the kit goes on AFTER you have the new seal and cover in place. I did not take off the fan shroud. After looking at the things I would have to disconnect I decided it would be easier to just leave the shroud on. There is sufficient room to get the fan out with the shroud on.

Check the crankshaft snout real close for wear. Dirt and crud is abrasive and will wear a nice little grove in the crankshaft.

Cummins has a wear sleeve to use for cranks that have that little groove. This sleeve almost guarantees the new seal will seal. The little wear groove almost guarantees the new seal will leak. :(

if not adressed
