2001 Jeep Cherokee Upper Control Arm bolts

On my International I'm having Alternator problems I took it and went to a truck elect. rebuild shop. They tore it down and have shown me that its pretty much history.

Its a 185 amp my question is there any harm or advantage to install a BIGGER amp alternator? They make them up to 280 amp. The reason is that on the stock trailer I have added substantially more lights and there are also lights in the trailer that are on for the gang running down the road also to the tractor. They are the LED type and I know that they take less power to run. On my trailer I have added 5 off road lights for when we put the horses in or out and for when we are putting them in their gear. Sometimes its still dark when we do this and need light for OUR safety. Just wondering if a high output alt is what i'm looking for. I will leave the truck idling while suiting up the gang as not to run off the batteries so to speak . Thanks for any info.

I have never been a fan of Leece Neville, mostly because the Delco was so easy to locate a rebuilt unit. Exchange it and go again, they were also fairly inexpensive. Does yours have just the one wire hook up?

I would think 185 amps would be plenty, I used the 22si Delco in 150 amp. I think our Dodges are 135 amp and seem to keep up ok.

I always ordered/sold Delco alternators on medium duty trucks instead of Leece-Neville. The customer was better off with a less expensive to own and repair alternator.

An alternator too big can make the belt slip or burn up. I have seen this on boats with V belts. Very low batteries and the alt puts out too much and loads the belt more than it can handle. For a v belt the "rule of thumb" is 100 amps on a single belt, 180 on a double.

Serpentine can handle more but I don't know the limits.

You also may need to upgrade the wire size to handle the higher amperage.

I installed a Leece Neville on my boat 2 seasons ago and it is working fine. Single belt so its only 90 amps.

I was wondering about the conversion to Delco or something else for that matter. But didnt know about the wiring I hate *******ISING anything electrical seems like it is always a problem point afterward for all time.

That's why on the few editions of TDR that gave a Great write up and Diagram layout of how to wire this or that was the best thing for me. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed and if I can see it once I've got it.

So on a Delco I could plug and play or chop and splice? If its plug and play ill do the delco. Thanks

The only thing crappier than a Leece naville alternator is a Leece naville starter. We're the wife works the whole fleet was fitted with them. It seems they all kicked the bucket within six weeks of each other. They replaced all with delco units.

Big most trucks any more have stud mounting for the wiring on the alt. The swap should be straightforward and relatively painless.

How many wires were hooked to it????

Mike. :)

Also, how does it mount???

One ear on top for adjustment, and two ears on the bottom???

Or two ears on top and two ears on the bottom???

Or 4 bolts holding it to the block with no adjustment???

In 2001, I bought a new IH4300 flatbed with a Holmes steel body. This was an early NGV- "New Generation Vehicle"- the one that looked like a Lincoln Navigator. It was ordered specifically for moving equipment, not cars, although I did some of that too. I opted for the DT466 engine, knowing its reputation for reliability. After several years (of very light use), the starter would occasionaly "zing" the ring gear, you could never tell when this was going to happen. I found out from the dealer that this was a widespread problem, and Navistar was backordered on replacement ring gears. The solution was to change the original Delco starter to an improved design with a different drive. I bougt a new Delco "clone" (translation- "imported") starter for a little over $300 and it worked fine. I cleaned up the four teeth on the ring gear with a die grinder and all was well.

I subsequently found out that International went to a LN starter that was made in S. Africa. There were no parts available for it, it was considered a throw-away starter.

I wonder if they saved enough on the cheap starters to pay for all the replacement ring gears and starters, many of which would be done under warranty, not after the warranty had timed out as in my case.

Bracket mounts to the block of motor then the bottom alt mount is 1long bolt with nut. The top is 1 bolt on arm from mount slides in a slot put pry bar behind and tighten. The belts 2 of them are on 2 sep. pulleys. 1 pos wire and 1 for ground to block. Back of original alt had + post and another post not marked but wire going to block.

BN,

The easiest and most affordable option is a 24SI Delco, brand new it should cost about $175. 00. Part Number 8600310 for a 160 amp version.

If you have your heart set on a 180 amp in Delco then you will have to come up to a 28SI series. Part Number 8600311. Should be around $325. 00 for brand new. This one uses an extra wire to the battery that is easy to add yourself, no worries.

Both part numbers I have supplied you are for your style of mount.

We sell new alternators rather than reman, I switched over several years ago and never looked back.

Also both the 24 and 28SI models have internal fans, the only thing you need from the old Leece Neville is the pulley. It will fit the Delcos, no problem.
