Greetings diesel motorheads. I am not new to diesels, having sold my 91 Dodge 4x4 with just over 120,000 miles on it a few weeks ago, so hopefully I won't try your patience with ignorant questions. I sold my 91 because I wanted more room and a ride that didn't cause blood in my urine. I bought a 2001 2500 QC 4x4 long bed with the 6 speed. I'm pretty sure it's white in color, the interior is agate, whatever color that maybe. It's weird, I think to myself, to have spent just under $31,000 for a truck I haven't seen yet as it is in Oregon and I'm in California. I bought the truck over the internet and never had to put anything on more than my underwear, which is fortunate for me since I have 2 broken wrists I suffered while riding my dirtbike. I get the casts off on Tuesday as well as 5 of the 7 pins so I figure that will be good enough to allow me and my buddy to go pick the truck up.
I have been reading all the posts on this site as well as reading all of my TDR magazines for info, great help by the way. What I have gathered so far is the truck may or may not do one of the following.
1. Not steer straight.
2. The 6 speed is gonna be stiff shifting for a while till it breaks in.
3. The air intake hose may collapse.
4. Some of the intercooler lines maybe loose.

Don't get me wrong, I am very much looking forward to picking my truck up. I loved my 91 as it was a fantastic truck. I hope my new one is as good of friend to me as my old one was. I knew what to expect from the old one, now for the new one I'm trying to find out things to look for before I take it off the dealers lot. Any suggestions other than just enjoying the ride?

Thanks to all,
Pat Daniels

Maybe see you on the road sometime. I'm working a contract at the Hewlett-Packard plant. Let me know if you have a hard time keeping it between the fences so I can duck. #ad

Don't forget there are going to be at least 100 posts about problems compared to posts about how great our trucks are. That's the nature of a forum like this. My '99 steers excellent. It tracks very straight and doesn't wander at all. No intake hose collapse and my intercooler clamps have been tight since day one. I have 40,000 miles and love my truck.

Havn't heard of the collapsed air intake hose yet. I have read about the other problems but fortunatly have none of them. Good Luck

My 2001 is perfect so far, Not every one is having those problems. I did get #2 for a while, but that's how a heavy duty trans is imo. The darn thing weighs 390lbs! VERY bullet proof trucks imo... Of course thats easy for me to say cause I've got zero problems so far. I chose the 2500 Dodge mostly for the Cummins, but the Dana 1 piece axles(Wait till you see the size of the Dana 80!) , NV5600 transmission, one piece drive shaft (reg cab) 1 ton brakes on a 2500 chassis, very strong frame, a cockpit that's really comfortable and plush, 4x4 ride height from the factory like the other guys get only after spending big $ on suspension and very simple maintainance. All that and 16-20 mpg in a truck that has the torque of a late 60's big block #ad
- The choice was easy...

I haven't heard from you for some time and I haven't seen any post, I thought maybe you became a Ford person. Good to see you are still alive.

I have a 2001. 5 H O 6 speed like the one you will be getting. She will tack up quick, all I do is tap the GO pedal and push the clutch next thing you know you will be in 6th. I have the 4:10 gears so it may be alittle faster to get it rolling than the 3:??. Yes the shifter will be kinda tight. Some folks have had trouble getting into 5th. I only have a little over 300 miles on mine and I messed up and went into No Mans land ( R while driving forward) twice so far looking for 5th. Once you get your truck all of this should make sense. When coming out of 4 don't push it just move it over and let her slip in gear. My truck was tight when I picked it up and after today it seams alot better, I put on about 200 miles today. I am in 6th at about 40-45 MPH. I don't know if it is the truck wearing in or me wearing into the truck. Best thing I can say is DRIVE it. This is my second RAM as well I had a 99 Auto that I traded for this truck.
As far as all the other stuff I don't know. Mine goes straight down the road, stops with no pull and no loose clamps. The engine oil was about a quart overfull and the transfer case and the front diff were a little bit over full. Depending on how far you went back in the posts, My truck did not have the red cap on the fuel tank vent either. That is a good thing.
Chris

I went back and re read my last post and just so i don't give anyone the wrong idea I am sending this. I am not new to driving a stick shift been doing it for about 20 years now. Started with Farm tractors and moved on to things that went faster.
What I meant about No Mans Land is I touched or (YES I messed up) and ground gears in a brand new truck.
I am begging for a thousand pardens and promised to wash and wax her on Sunday if she will forgive me.
Again DON"T FORCE IT. This thing is great to drive and she turns heads where ever she goes.
Enjoy
Chris

Have had my 2500 ETH DEE for 5 months. Only problem is not enough time to drive it. Hope yours is reliable(and enjoyable)as mine.

Hi, I've had mine for about two weeks and it's a really nice truck. I haven't had any of the problems you listed. Mine was built around three or four weeks ago, so this is what I have. I have the Delphi Steering box #... AF, and it is tight and true. It is significant improvement over the 96-97's I use at work. Yeah the 6speed requires a little more effort, but all things considered, it's really not that bad. 5 and 6 require a significant effort to the right side, and reverse is a little more right then 5. Have heard others grinding reverse while trying to get 5. Compared to a roadranger 13 speed, its alot shorter throw, and less effort. Havent heard about #3, and in regards to #4, My truck has screw type hose clamps from the turbo to the intake elbow. Granted these might work loose, but They appear tighter then the pinch clamp ones in the past. P. S. the rear discs are very good at stopping and the brakes have fantastic feel. Good luck it's a fun truck

My 01 drives and rides great. Ive driven sticks before, including semis, and this transmission is tight shifting at first. With 4200+ miles it is getting better. It actually shifts better underload ie pulling my TT,then empty. I do not anticipate any problems. I do have a posting regarding a howl/whine on mine but after being at the dealer Friday I beleive its just a characteristic of this particular truck. The power is impressive and I love the sound when a little throttle is given.

CoastyAV8R... ... You will love your truck!

Picked mine up June 1 I now have over 24,000 miles... Heres my VHO... . Mileage and throttle response will increase atleast till you hit 20,000. .

The shifting ... stiff at first... But you and the truck will break each other in... . Mine is perfect now...

I would tigthten your Intercooler clamps...

It is a good Idea to find a nice HEAVY trailer and pull it around for a while... Over some mountains... . Your Cummins will thankyou for it!!

Also The NEW EDGE EZ Timing/Fuel/Boost Box that HVAC is selling Is the PERFECT First or only addition for our 24V Cummins. .
IMHO it is the best product out.

We Installed one on my truck at the TULARE CA. Truck Showdown Yesterday... .

It takes 2 to 8 min to install... . Does not disturb any tamper stickers.....

You may have problems shifting quick enough with your wrists. Second gear runs out before my foot gets to the floor!!.

Okay enough... Happy Truckin... ... ...

Thanks for all the replies. I know the posts I have read and mentioned are more the exception than the rule. I am really looking forward to picking the truck up. I would have loved to have it and gone to the truck showdown in Tulare this past weekend but my wrists start to bother me if I walk around too much and I know I would have stumbled around till I passed out if I'd have gone. It's also hard to find a guy who will help me buckle up my britches after goin to the bathroom.
Joe G. , I fly on C130's out of McClellan AFB In sacramento so that may explain a Coasty being so far away from the water. I'll steer clear of the H-P plant till I get the 6 speed figured out.
I didn't become a Phord guy, I just figured everything out on the old Dodge, that's why I hadn't been seeking your first generation wisdom.
Thanks to all for the replies, I'll update my progress with new truck.

Pat

How do you ID the steering box? I looked at mine from the bottom, and did not see any ID. Just wondering which one I have. Truck was built on 09-15-00. Ranger Dick or anyone else, can you point me in the right direction??

Hey Coastie, Got mine in April and have had no problems. It pulls my 8,000 lb boat great. Have had to use 4wheel lock on several boat ramps even with the limited slip rear. I now use 4 wheel everytime at the ramp to ensure when I get out to launch, the truck stays on the ramp.

Look down at it from the top. White sticker with black lettering (on my AF, at least).

Hey Rock,
I was stationed with you in Miami from 93-97. I was a tweet working on the G-1. I was surprised to see your name cause when you left Miami you wanted a Dodge Ramcharger to haul your boat around, nice to see ya got a diesel. I'm still in, stationed in Sacramento flyin Hercs now.

Take care

Pat, good to hear from you, enjoy your truck. I have had no problems with mine other than stale A/C smell whick I solved with TDR member help, and relocation of my blow by bottle hose. Take care.

Hey Coastie
I forgot to tell you that the exhaust system falls off just prior to the muffler #ad

I had to work on mine for about 45 minutes before I got it to fall off. Have no fear I had the fairly god mother give me a Walker 21468 to put up in it's place. I have a feeling that it will get welded in tomorrow at a local muffler shop.
I hope your wrists are feeling better before your muffler falls off #ad
