I just received a letter in the mail from Chrysler. Says that there is a "Limited Warranty Extension for ECM reprogramming on my truck"?????

Says that they will re-flash the ecm... Also stated that its got something to do with inspection and emissions crap.

I REALLY don't want the local idiots working on my truck... Not sure I can trust a tech. to load software that couldn't remember to tighten lugnuts on my wifes Jeep!!!. .

Anybody else get one of these letters in the mail???. . Or can anybody elaborate on EXACTLY whats being done and why??. .

Yep, I got one too. Not sure what is going on, but i'll wait for them to contact me directly to see if they want me to bring it in.

It actually read kinda weird... It talked aobut emissions stuff on 06 5. 9L engines AND 07 6. 7L engines????... . With the 6. 7L being a "regen" engine, I wouldn't have thought that they would share anything other than the Cummins name...

With my luck, they would do the update, then the CEL would come on all the time!!. .

I got one too, but I'm in California. I assumed it was related to California requiring emmisions test for diesels as of Januray 1, 2010.

I got one for my 07 5. 9L. I'm not sure what it means either. They made it sound like there was a new flash but didn't come out and say my truck needed flashed. Its not a recall either, just a letter.

Figure I'll confuse the dealer with it when I go in next.

DO NOT get the reflash till you here from someone that has had it flashed onto there truck and find out if thay lost power and MPG. and if you go to the dealer for any repair work you tell them NOT TO reflash because if your truck is in there shop for repair on any thing thay will reflash with out asking you . It happened to me. I had a 2003 Ford with the 6. 0 and thay reflashed it and the truck was never the same truck it lost power and MPG it ran good but no power and no MPG . I asked them to put the old stock flash back on but thay told me you can not go back once the reflash is in. So that is why I sold the Ford and went back to Dodge . So DO NOT reflash till you here from 3 or 4 Dodge owners that it is a good reflash on there trucks.

If it's an emissions related update,we don't have a choice. My notice is a recall, says it right across the top. Here in Ca of course, we can't renew our already outrageous registration without the update. I recently loaded the 418b Smarty program which included the Dodge updates before the K01. The smoke's way down and it delivers the same power, egt's and mpgs. I'm assuming Marco's going to have to write another program for us K01 guys to enable a reload after the K01. My renewal's not due before 12-30-10.

I'm not sure if this is a U. S. dealer problem or not, however, whenever I take my truck in they always phone me and ask if I would like a certain reflash or not. One in particular was a recall (not sure if it required a reflash) on shutting down the engine and hearing the chirp. I said leave it alone; I want to hear that Cummins kiss.

It's not a recall, it's a warranty extension that covers the flash forever, except for California vehicles that are covered by recall K01. If your truck will not pass an emissions test for OBDII compliance, or a state IM test you are entitled to the flash that will correct the problem. If your state does not require a test, or the test does not require hooking up to the OBDII diagnostic port there is no need to get the flash. Remember, each flash includes all the updates since the last flash(es) so this flash may do more than just fix this problem depending on when the last time your truck was flashed.
See TSB 18-017-10 for complete details if your still on the fence. CA trucks will not be able to renew registration without getting the recall flash.
HINT-if you do not have high idle enabled and you get the flash, be sure to return immediately to have it re-enabled.

Sag2, Thanks for the explaination. I have really lost faith in my local dealership and have NO plans to let them touch any vehicle I own. I think since I live in Texas, I won't worry about that software update.

Again, Thanks for elaborating on what it really was. .

Sag Is this for 06's and later ? I have an 05 called dealership to ask if I needed to get flash prior to getting my truck smogged. He said no I did not need to get flashed.

abdiver:

I received that notice last year and required the smog crap this year. If the reader works without the flash, you are good. Mine passed without it.

It's all about the "readiness" part of the computer that reads the sensors related to the smog components. Some computers aren't exporting the values to the OBDII port for the smog who is plugging in. There has only been one issue with a truck owned by a TDR member Chrysler fixed it for him then letters went out.
