The new International I-6 line....

1980 Mercedes 300 SD Turbo

Does anyone have any feedback on how the engie runs and starts when it is cold?

Are there any forums similar to the TDR for the Liberty Diesel?

Thanks!

John

good luck trying to get one. that motor has been used for a few years in europe. i would like to think with weather there it must be reliable. i have not heard of any feed back yet though.

I read a guy had one but I don't remember if it was here or DTR. As I recall the fuel mileage on first two tanks wasn't that great, like around 18 and 21.

Yah that sounds like what I have read on the mileage for the diesel Liberty. The engine is half the size of the Cummins and the Liberty weighs half that of the Rams and it's mileage is just the same.

I drove one for the first time today. It has some good power to it. The dealer mom works for here in Iowa has 5 of them on the lot. I'm sure she would be more than happy to sell you one. lol

Back in '85 Jeep put a Renault 4 cyl turbo diesel in the Cherokee Pioneer. Built 2000 for sale in the US. I had one. Wish I still had it. Loved it. 34 mpg. Hauled my family of 5 just fine. Pulled my boat just fine. Even pulled a 13' travel trailer with it.

Just thought i would mention for anyone near ohio, that Bob Caldwell Chrysler Jeep in Columbus Ohio has a few liberty diesels available. Contact Eric Tinshner at 614-888-2331 make sure you tell them Daniel B sent you.

saw one yetersay hazed a bit at take off. i could not read the emblem on the back but it looked like GRD lower left but i guess it was CRD???

I drove one today while my truck was being serviced... the cold start up was smooth, but noisier than my truck's cold start-up... drove it about 10 miles or so and was impressed with motor get up and go and solid ride, road noise not too bad either... the 5-spd auto was very smooth... the one I drove was at $24K, they had a Limited with Leather, roof, etc for $29K... the dealer I was at was Oak Harbor Motors... they had 3 CRD's on the lot... noticed that the motor is manufactured in Italy... is it an MBZ inline-4???

the motor is made by vm moroti. i have been told it is used in many other european versions of chrysler vehicles. it is supposed to be pretty widly used over there.

VM Motori = division of Detroit Diesel = division of Daimler Chrysler. So, yes in a round about way it is a DC motor.

This connection also explains the Durimax. D-Max came out in 2001 which is about the same time that DC bought Detroit controlling interest. Hmmm, GM then goes to Isuzu for a small diesel motor. :p

Okay let me be the first to officially own one... . I bought one on Friday the 8th of April. Loaded with Leather and the works. Traded in my gas Liberty for the diesel and so far I love it. Got 24. 8 mpg returning home from Carson City Jeep through the Eastern Sierra mountains, down the I 395. So far so good. I figure with the price of diesel it will make up for the increase in payment. The gas Liberty only got 13 mpg around town. :{

It comes with an engine block heater too so it shouldn't have a problem in cold weather. The cord is wrapped up and stowed up under the engine cover so you can route it where ever you like. I have it here in the south right now and in 40 degree mornings it heats up way quicker than the 5. 9 in my Dodge. I only wish they would have put some gauges in it. All it has is water temp, fuel, speed and a tach. Looks like I will need to start doing mods on this one real soon. The cat will have to go along with the giant size muffler and the EGR. Would like it to make a little more noise although it has a cute little growl for those who like it quiet. It has a 545 LFE Transmission which is the same as what is behind the Hemi. Auto 5 speed, but I am used to my ATS trans in the Dodge so I will be calling ATS ASAP to see if Clint has some fixes for the "WAY too smooth" shift thing that it does.

All in all it is very nice with lots of get up and go. Will let you all know what it does at the race track after May Madness. Betty Oo.

Thanks for the owner/operator report, Betty!

I'm hoping the mileage goes up a bit... a 2. 8L, 4-hole, common-rail diesel shouldn't eat the same amount of fuel as a 5. 9L, 6-hole, common-rail diesel installed in a vehicle that weighs twice as much.

Do you REALLY live in California? What state did you register the jeep in? This version is not supposed to be 50 state legal.
