hi having hard time installing lift pump i here now that motor should have been at top dead center can i turn motor by hand don,t have baring tool and would it harm timing pin to get cam on low side thanks albert

its too hard to try and push the plunger in and use the bolts, most guys install studs, then you can put it on with lock nuts. Look up installing the lift pump on this forum, they will have the correct stud size, and you can install/remove much easier that way!

Lift pump? TDC? I have never owned and know very little about 12 valve engines but I thought the lift pump/fuel transfer pump was powered by 12 volts in all Cummins powered Rams. Am I confused?

You can roll the engine with the alternator pulley in one direction, can't remember which way. I do it with a 1/2" drive ratchet on the alternator nut, sometimes you have to push down on the belt just a little to get a bit more traction.

I call it... ...

"Lazy I don't want to get under the truck fat man method"... ... ... ... . :D

12 valves have the mechanical lift pump on the drivers side of the block. There is a spacer/fuel preheater unit that goes between the pump and block which makes it a 3 handed operation to get it all back in there.

If he can get the lobe on the cam at it's lowest point it makes it a lot easier to start the bolts back in.

The 24 valves were the beginning of the electric pumps.

Thanks for the lesson. I had no idea. I guess that is another example of why the old 12 valves are considered so practical, durable, and reliable.

The lift pump is only on high cam once in two engine revolutions so the chances of it being up are slim. If it is, just bump the starter for a half turn or so.

We just did our lift pump today on a 1998 12v through the fender. Took just over an hour including figuring it out (our first time). Took plastic fender cover out, on the right side of shock (driver side, tire removed, facing the shock) (safety stands mandatory here!!)

!!First there are wires or anything in that area on the other side of inner fender that needs to be moved out of the way before cutting begins!!

We cut out some inner metal fender with a cutting wheel. Took a chunk about 5" high up from top of frame, starting at the shock, by 8" long and down again. The opening was large enough to work through. Now there are sharp edges which can be smoothed down to help prevent cutting your skin.

Everything above the lift pump was left untouched so no worries about extra leaks, and everything else is now easily accessable including fuel heater.....

The plastic fender cover covers that area anyways when reinstalled.

What a good idea. I'll bet that makes everything on the side of the engine accessable.

GAmes: makes a world of a difference. I've had new lines, lift pump, an injection pump installed on my tractor (everything right there in the open) but some lines had to be a pain in the butt trying to prevent leaking because they were disturbed. It's hard to get them perfect and not leak. Even new stuff.

Also the cam lobe for the lift pump was easy to see through the fender and just have to turn it a little to move lobe away so no pushing effort to install. The old bolts work well.

Then next time something needs to be fixed, just remove fender cover again. Starter is there, lift pump, fuel heater... .

This was my buddy Marc's idea and I agreed with him and we went for it.
